COMMUNITY EVENTS

Join the Peace Centre & the Dawson Student Union in the return of Dawson Dinin’ Peace Week Edition. From September 13th – 21st the Dawson Community will be invited to drop off their reusable containers at the Conrod’s kitchen prior to 11:30 am. Pick up will start as of 1:00 pm. All meals will be vegan.

September 13 – September 21: Urban Gardening with Sustainable Dawson. Open to the Dawson Community.

Before the frost comes get your hands dirty with us! Book your class now to spend time in the gardens during Peace Week. Not only will they get a crash course in urban gardening & biodiversity but you and your students will experience the calming and anti-stress effects that the natural world offers. This is an activity that brings together positive action for mental health and learning simultaneously. Register to join this activity,

 

September 21st: Dinner & Drag听Join us for the final evening of Peace Week. Dawson Dining will be an offering of dinner along with a fulsome community wide invitation to attend a special performance by beloved local Drag Queen ensemble, The House of Manny, fronted by . Attendance will be free however; we will encourage donations from participants so we may support a local LGBTQ+ organization.听 to register your attendance, limited seating, registration required.

September 13th @10 am, room 5B.16 (STUDENTS & EMPLOYEES WELCOME)“Beyond Pronouns” aims to illuminate and investigate the ways each of us, in our respective lives and as future social service workers, can contribute to the safety and wellbeing of 2 spirit, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people, and protect body autonomy for everyone. Together we will look at language, concepts and challenges in regards to gender and sexuality in our society in order to create a foundation upon which to build new ways of living and working in solidarity with marginalized 2 spirit, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people.听We will also begin to reflect on how to “do” harm reduction, an approach that not only focuses on material means but aims to build power in marginalized communities.

Friday, September 15th, Peace & Self Panel听 @ 1:00pm – 2:15 pm rm tbd, join us for a panel discussion on the idea of Peace & Self as a part of the Peace 365 class, part of the Peace Studies Certificate, featuring Lisa Steffan (History), Susan Finch (Psychology), moderated by Ivan Freud (Religion). No registration required.

Tuesday, September 19th @ 10:00 am, Dawson Theatre (entrance off of Atwater).听 K.B Wagers, (They/Them) Writing Queer Lives. Join author K.B. Wagers as they talk about cosplaying as a straight woman for the first 42 years of their life, the realization of their true self, and how they strive to fit as much queerness into a traditionally cis, white, het, male dominated space like military science fiction.听(We will be giving out copies of KB Wagers鈥檚 first trilogy, the Indranian War Series at several events).

Kama La Mackarel (They/Them) (left) & Maurice Riley Case (He/Him) (right) Towards Liberation: Black, Queer and Joyful. Join us to witness a conversation between Kama La Mackerel and Maurice Riley Case, two Black and queer organizers, artists, and creators, as they discuss the intricacies of survival, resistance, and how to reconcile their wellbeing within an embodiment of emancipatory politics.

Thursday, September 21st @ 10:00 am, rm 4C.1 Kelsey Smoot,鈥(贬别/罢丑别测) On Mirrors: A Curation of Black Queer Poetry, Narrative, and Thought. Kelsey will share excerpts from their dissertation project titled, 鈥On Mirrors: Radical Musings of Black, Queer Masculinity & Boihood Worldmaking.鈥 They will engage attendees in an interactive conversation on interdisciplinary, community – based scholarship, while discussing his experience as a Black trans writer and thinker navigating academia. Kelsey will illustrate how his usage of oral history, auto-ethnography, poetics, and public-facing scholarship culminated in a dissertation project that rejects categorization and consciously blurs the boundaries between theory, art, and praxis.听
