Food Justice at Dawson

Share

Food Justice is a core tenet of well-being-for-all. This is why the Office of Sustainability, the Peace Centre, Student Services, and the Dawson Student Union (DSU) have teamed up this year to expand free and healthy accessible meals to our community up to four days a week.

Since Sept. 9, the Dawson Community can grab vegan or vegetarian breakfasts at the Early Bird Breakfast, snacks (books, clothes, and other free giveaways) at the Zero Waste Cafe, and lunch courtesy of Dawson Dinin’. In addition to the incredible support of the DSU and the ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ÊÓƵ administration, Dawson Dinin’ is blessed by the skills of head Chef Jamal Spence. Each of these programs is supported by a legion of dedicated student and staff volunteers.

We would like to extend a shout out to Yvonne Dudley, Financial Aid Office, who co-leads each Monday Early Bird Breakfast Service.

To date all three food programs, the Early Bird Breakfast, Zero Waste Cafe, and Dawson Dinin’ have served 3,253 meals with 137 volunteer shifts. Serving up accessibility, inclusion and equity through food justice programming fulfils the College’s core value of Well-Being-For-All. Furthermore, it helps us live the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Zero Hunger, Sustainable Cities, Peace and Strong Institutions, and Good Health & Well-Being.

Come be a part of a movement to make our community hunger free while on campus by donating your time or donating to the Living Campus Fund through the Dawson Foundation.

To volunteer: 1. Show up! Just come by, ask if we need help & grab an apron! Mon – Thursdays (let the smell of food lead you to us!)

  1. Email of the Office of Sustainability
  2. Visit Campus Life or the DSU Offices

We look forward to serving with and to you. Thank you, Dawson! Your energy and passion for the community helps serve up a better day for us all!
