In 2015, the Conference of the Parties for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) signed a new agreement in Paris to strengthen the global response to climate change. Governments agreed to identify and commit to nationally determined contributions (NDCs) for reductions in emissions as well as to provide support for adapting to the impacts of climate change for the most vulnerable countries.

After its adoption in 2016, the Paris Agreement is now the most significant venue and framework for global collective action to avoid dangerous climate change. As the United States is expected to withdraw in 2020, and countries continue to evaluate and update their commitments, Elizabeth will bring her extensive expertise and experience to address the demands of the Paris Agreement in 2020.

Elizabeth May is the Green Party of Canada鈥檚 first elected Member of Parliament, representing Saanich-Gulf Islands in southern Vancouver Island. In 2005, Elizabeth May was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of her decades of leadership in the Canadian environmental movement.

She graduated from Dalhousie Law School and was admitted to the Bar in both Nova Scotia and Ontario. She practiced law in Ottawa with the Public Interest Advocacy Centre prior to becoming Senior Policy Advisor to the federal Minister of the Environment (1986-1988). For 17 years Elizabeth served as Executive Director of the Sierra Club of Canada.

In April 2019, Elizabeth married John Kidder, retired entrepreneur and co-founder of the Green Party of B.C. A proud mother and grandmother, she lives in Sidney, British Columbia.
