Call for Facilitators! Faculty Learning Communities

Want to connect with colleagues, engage in rich discussions about the scholarship of teaching and learning, and tackle teaching challenges as part of a convivial and collegial group? Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) might be the answer.

We are currently soliciting applications to facilitate up to four Faculty Learning Communities for the 2025-鈥�26 academic year. You are also invited to discuss any potential FLC ideas during our Drop-In Info Session on Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 1:30 PM-3:30 PM in the Co-Lab (3F.43). Application deadline: Dec. 9, 2024.

Coach Wayne Yearwood receiving medal Oct. 25 at basketball home games

Dawson Blues Division 1 Men's basketball Coach Wayne Yearwood will be honoured by Westmount鈥揝aint-Louis Member of the National Assembly Jennifer Maccarone on Friday, Oct. 25 at the Basketball Home Opening Games.

The ceremony will take place at 9 PM in the Tony Proudfoot Gymnasium at Dawson following the Division 2 Dawson Blues Women鈥檚 Team vs. Outaouais at 7 PM and just before Wayne's team plays 脡douard Montpetit.

Everyone is most welcome to attend but please make sure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the brief ceremony at 9 PM.

There will be Dawson Dance performances at half-time for both games and our Mascot Blue will also be there.

Students and staff are invited to wear their Dawson Blues blue on Friday as a show of team spirit. Prizes available from Campus Life for students who wear blue.

Appointment of Patrick Khoueiry as new Associate Director of FAMA

Patrick Khoueiry began his new job as Associate Director of Facilities Management responsible for auxiliary services on Oct. 15.

At Dawson, Patrick is responsible for the following services: Purchasing, the Bookstore, PARC, the Print Shop, Health and Safety, Security, Parking, and the cafeteria.

Patrick comes to Dawson from Abu Dhabi where he was head of procurement and auxiliary services at Sorbonne University. He holds an MBA from Princely International University and a Master鈥檚 in Social Research from Sorbonne University in Paris.

Patrick is excited about 鈥渢he opportunity to contribute to a vibrant learning environment. I am passionate about ensuring that our resources and services enhance the educational experience for both students and faculty. Being part of a community that values innovation and creativity truly energizes me every day.鈥�

Meet the new Chair of Dawson’s Board

Sean Smith (Class of 2001, Pure & Applied Science) chaired his first Board of Governors meeting as the incoming chair on Sept. 11.

Apart from being a graduate of Dawson, Sean is a tech entrepreneur and engineer. In 2015, he founded VOZWIN INC., a R&D and design engineering firm offering AI Development, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Design Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, Software Design Engineering, Innovation Strategy, and Innovation Coaching.

Electrical Engineering student singing on Quel Talent

Alexander (Alex) D鈥橝lesio is a third-year Dawson student in Electrical Engineering Technology who is competing as a singer in Quebec鈥檚 version of America鈥檚 Got Talent, Quel Talent. The filming was done in the summer but the final on Monday, Nov. 11 will be live.

First Open House event went very smoothly

This year the Open House organizing team, Carey-Ann Pawsey, Christine Layne and Megan Ainscow from the Communications Office and associate deans Myl猫ne Saucier, Brid Nic Niocaill, Bassel Attalah and Timothy Miller, implemented some new ideas to improve the Open House experience for both visitors and staff.

The first Open House event last Sunday went very well and the team is gearing up for the second one this Sunday, Oct. 27. Thanks to everyone who works so hard to welcome prospective students to Dawson.

Funding applications open for SAGE projects

The application period is now open for students, faculty and staff who wish to apply for up to $5,000 for a student project. A total amount of $40,000 is available and projects selected by the SAGE Committee will receive funding at the beginning of the Winter 2025 semester. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Nov. 17 at 11:59 PM.

In order to be considered, projects must:

  • Demonstrate a clear benefit for Dawson students.
  • Represent an activity that goes over and above core competencies for completion of a DEC or an AEC.

The Student Academic Growth and Enrichment Fund (SAGE) is supported directly by Dawson students via a $10 contribution per semester to the 星空传媒视频 Foundation.

Students are encouraged to apply. Please promote this opportunity to students you know. Staff and faculty may also apply but their applications must be pre-approved by their supervisor/dean.

Performa Courses Winter 2025

星空传媒视频 offers support for current teachers and educational professionals to engage in the accredited professional development program in college teaching and pedagogy from the University of Sherbrooke. The Performa program encourages continuous learning directly relevant to teaching and professional roles in the college network.

  • Instructional Strategies for Active Learning
  • Motivation Engagement and Learning

The courses are held on-line and in blended learning format.

Save the Date: Mental Health Fair Nov. 13

The Mental Health Fair is a student event happening on Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 11 AM to 2 PM in the Lower Atrium. Its purpose is to bring a diverse array of community-based resources to Dawson students to promote and support their well-being and mental health. Organizations providing support in the following areas will be present: disordered eating, crisis intervention, addiction, sexual and gender identity, sexual violence, life skills, physical and psychological disorders, suicide prevention, social polarization, and care-giving. The event generated a lot of interest from our community partners and we had to cap the number of participating organizations at 14.

Food Justice is a core tenet of well-being-for-all. This is why the Office of Sustainability, the Peace Centre, Student Services, and the Dawson Student Union (DSU) have teamed up this year to expand free and healthy accessible meals to our community up to four days a week.

Last day to sign petition exempting Indigenous students from Law 14

The Dawson Student Union (DSU) requesting that the Quebec government fully exempt Indigenous students from the harmful provisions of Law 14 is closing Oct. 25.

This is the last chance to share and sign it: https://www.assnat.qc.ca/en/exprimez-votre-opinion/petition/Petition-10915/index.html

To date, the signature count is at 2,713. On Oct. 30, a delegation led by the Dawson Student Union will travel to Quebec City to officially deposit the petition.

Diagnostic Imaging students promoting profession Nov. 7

Third-year students in Diagnostic Imaging Technology will be presenting their projects entitled "Awareness to the Profession" in the Lower Atrium on Thursday, Nov. 7 from 9 AM-12 PM. This is taking place during the national Medical Radiation Technologists (MRT) Week.

Honey extraction workshop Oct. 30

Did you know we have two honey beehives on Dawson's rooftop?

The Office of Sustainability recently led a honey extraction workshop with Brian Mader's Biology of Sustainability course and next week employees are invited to harvest their own honey.

Approximately 30 biology students came last week. They had to get their hands dirty, or should I say their fingers sticky, and help extract honey from our bee frames located in the 4H rooftop hives.

Our bees are still young, but still produced a lot of honey thanks to our many pollinating聽flower gardens on campus, which are all maintained by our very own Sustainabili-team student and employee volunteers.

We will be offering a honey extraction workshop to employees on Wednesday, October 30 from 11 AM to 12 PM in the Rose Lounge (7C.5) This can be a great use of well-being hours for employees! The fun-filled hour will include uncapping honeycomb cells, hand-spinning honeycombs in the centrifugal extractor, and filtering the raw honey before jarring and labelling it.

All employees will leave with a little sample jar of Dawson's honey. To sign up, please fill out this .

Moose activity at Dawson

In what is becoming an annual tradition for the Indigenous community at Dawson, students participated in the First Peoples鈥� Centre moose harvest activity on campus Oct. 24. Organized by Cree student Angela Ottereyes (student in Law, Society & Justice) with guidance from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, students got to reconnect with their traditions and help butcher the moose delivered by hunters from Listuguj Mi鈥檊maq community.

Some tricks to defeat the digital ghouls

Although October is best known for Halloween, it also happens to be International Cyber Security Awareness month. Please read on for some tricks to help defeat the digital ghouls!

You may have already received or will soon receive an invitation from Dawson's IT Support to complete a 10-minute Cyber Security course entitled Email Phishing. These courses are part of our ministerial requirements on Cyber Security.

  • Beware of phishing scams! We run yearly simulations to help you practice recognize these pranks. The simple, telltale signs still work, one of which is an outside email posing as a colleague. If you see one, report it in Outlook by clicking on "Report Phishing."
  • Do not engage or respond to your colleagues outside the College platforms, which are Dawson email, MyDawson MIO (Omnivox, and Teams. Read more about phishing on our pages.
  • Stop and take a moment to examine hyperlinks and their context.
  • Store your work files on SharePoint and OneDrive, rather than locally on your computer. In the event of your computer being infected it will be quarantined and local files will be lost.
  • Notice any suspicious email, activity, vulnerabilities, hacking, etc.? Who ya gonna call? IT Support!
