Happy Lunar New Year

Dawson had an early celebration of Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, which begins on Feb. 10. The Campus Life team organized a visit of the Montreal Chinese Lion Dance Club on Feb. 7. Academic Dean Leanne Bennett, Student Services Coordinator Caroline Blouin and Director General Diane Gauvin fed the lions lettuce.

Traditionally, lions are fed lettuce because the Chinese word for lettuce sounds similar to the word for wealth. So the lion eats the wealth and then spits it back out to the audience to give them prosperity.

More space for Nursing at the Forum

Dawson鈥檚 Nursing department has moved into a new home across the street from the main campus on the second floor of the Forum. They join Physiotherapy Technology and Medical Ultrasound Technology, which are also housed at the Forum.

50th anniversary reunion and celebration of New School April 13听

Dawson鈥檚 鈥渘ovel experiment鈥� New School is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024. That is what The Gazette called New School in an article published in April 1973.

Back then, New School was created to engage students in their own learning and to build communities so that students would not get lost in a big institution.

The Campus Life Office, the Library and the Social Science Week organizers have all planned things to mark Black History Month 2024 at Dawson.

Some of the events include:

  • CL脡 exposition in front of the cafeteria ends Monday, Feb. 12
  • Overture with the Arts: Tuesday, Feb. 13,听4:30 PM to 5:30 PM in Conrod's (2F)
  • Underground Comedy Railroad: Thursday, Feb. 15 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM in Conrod's (2F)
  • Djamboola Dance Activity hosted by Rich'Art will be taking place in Conrod's Wednesday, Feb. 21听during the DSU Multicultural Week.

Social Science Week is Feb. 12-16

Social Science Week is next week! There is a diverse array of speakers and topics to interest everyone at Dawson鈥檚 Social Science Week 2024, from Monday, Feb. 12 through Friday, Feb. 16. All events are taking place in 5B.16 at Dawson and every day concludes with a Cinema Politica film screening at 6:30 PM.

Dawson 2024-2029 Strategic Plan prioritizes student development through the lens of well-being

Over the next five years, 星空传媒视频 will deliver on its academic mission led by the overarching value of Well-being for All, which emphasizes the cultivation of a stimulating, inclusive and caring environment for learning and working.听 Other core values of the plan include Student Achievement, Institutional Excellence, Collaboration, and Innovation and Creativity.

In its newly released 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, the College鈥檚 strategic goal setting is guided by the interrelationship between students, communities both internal and external to the College, and the environment. Emphasis will be placed on supporting students to develop as a whole person: to lead meaningful lives and take on rewarding work while considering the impact on others and the planet, all while prioritizing their own physical and mental health.

Campus Life, Dawson Gives, Living Campus, Peace Centre, Sustainability, Well-being for all

Free meals three days a week

The Office of Sustainability, the听Peace Centre, and the Dawson Student Union are thrilled to announce a new food justice initiative听to expand access to food security for students and employees during the Winter 2024 semester.

Beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 13, Dawson Dining will be offered two days every week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as a collaboration between the Office of Sustainability and the Dawson Student Union. This service will end on May 22. Students and employees can drop off their labelled containers on Tuesdays and Wednesdays by 11 AM at Conrod鈥檚 (2F). All meals are vegan and zero-waste (90 per cent of waste will be diverted from a landfill).

As of Thursday, Feb. 15, the Peace Centre, under the auspices of the Office of Sustainability, will offer free Early Bird Breakfast to the Dawson community on a first come, first served basis. This will continue every Thursday at 10 AM in Conrod's (2F) for the winter 2024 semester. All meals will be clearly indicated vegetarian or vegan and will also be zero-waste. The service will end May 23.

(also available in the cafeteria to reduce our waste) will be provided to students that can be returned to the Cano dispensers near the cafeteria.

If you would like to help out with the meal services, please email Diana Rice, who says: 鈥淭his is a wonderful way to meet new colleagues, get to know the students we work so hard for every day, and just feel good about being of service."

Julie S. Lalonde back at Dawson to speak about stalking Feb. 20

Award-winning speaker, author and women鈥檚 rights advocate Julie S. Lalonde will be at Dawson Feb. 20 to deliver her talk 鈥淐reating a Consent Culture: Understand the Links between Sexual Violence and Stalking.鈥�

This event is open to the 星空传媒视频 community of employees and students.

Those who attend:

  • can gain an understanding of the reality of stalking (ie: criminal harassment) in Canada and how it鈥檚 part of the sexual violence continuum
  • learn about techniques for supporting survivors of stalking in your life (personally and professionally).

Join Tiio Hemlock, Pedagogical Counsellor from the Office of Academic Development (OAD), for a viewing of an episode from the PBS documentary Native America.听 This documentary explores and contradicts Historian George Bancroft鈥檚 claim that before Europeans arrived, North America was 鈥渁n unproductive waste. Its only inhabitants were a few scattered tribes of feeble barbarians, destitute of commerce and political connection.鈥�

A discussion will follow.

Sign up for Dawson Blood Drive Feb. 20-21

Giving blood is an easy way to make a difference and give back to your community. H茅ma-Qu茅bec is making it even easier by coming to Dawson. There will be a blood drive by reservation in 3C.1 on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 20-21.

Sixth Dawson cohort begins AI Launch Lab/Dawson AI series Feb. 10

AI Launch Lab and Dawson AI are offering a sixth series of workshops on artificial intelligence beginning Feb. 10.

Registration is open to all college students for a free eight-week online course on Saturday mornings beginning Feb. 10.

Winter Wellness Series launches Feb. 27

The Peace and Sustainability Winter Wellness Series will launch on Tuesday, Feb. 27 with a Living Campus biophilic tour and a hands-on indoor gardening workshop. All participants will receive a house plant!

The plan is to offer a wellness workshop/event each month of the semester.

To participate in the Feb. 27 workshop, which will take place from 12 PM to 1 PM, you must register.

Dawson鈥檚 solidarity delegation to Cuba

Twelve students and two teachers from the Social Change and Solidarity profile of Social Science returned from Cuba Jan. 15 after a three-week solidarity delegation.

The trip is a close partnership with the Centro Martin Luther King Jr. (CMLK) in Cuba, an organization that promotes local and global solidarity, popular education, and justice. The Dawson group traveled to Havana, Puerto Esparanza, Cienaga de Zapatas, Trinidad, and Santa Clara.

Applications/nominations open for Forces Avenir until Feb. 28

Up to $60,000 will be given out this year through the Forces AVENIR awards.

Forces AVENIR awards recognize, honour and promote the commitment of students and staff in projects that contribute to the development of socially conscious, responsible, active and persevering citizens who are both dedicated to their community and open to the world.

Free Video Game Playtesting Event on Feb. 23

The Independent Video Game Design program is presenting a new edition of its bimonthly indie game playtesting event in room 3C.1 of 星空传媒视频 on Friday, Feb. 23 from 6 PM to 9 PM.

The Playtest @ IVGD event will showcase over a dozen new independent video games created by local developers including current Dawson students, graduates, IVGD faculty, and several Montreal-based indie studios.

Come celebrate the emerging talent in Montreal's continually growing game development scene by trying out the games, chatting with developers and enjoying a few snacks.

Graduation date is June 25

Exceptionally this year, Dawson graduation ceremonies will be held after Saint Jean on Tuesday, June 25. The later date is because the grade deadline is exceptionally later this semester. Time is required to confirm students have in fact graduated.

The good news is that Dawson has secured the 2,996-seat Salle Wilfred Pelletier at Place des Arts so there will be enough space to host two ceremonies instead of three.

DCMUN update

A delegation of 49 students in 星空传媒视频 Model United Nations (DCMUN) participated in the Dawson delegation to the McGill Model United Nations conference (McMUN) Jan 25- 28. McMUN is one of the premier Model UN conferences in North America, attracting nearly 2,000 student delegates from universities and colleges across North America and from around the world.

Magalie听McKay, DCMUN Head Delegate at the McMUN conference described her experience:

鈥淚 was in absolute awe with the McMUN conference. In addition to working with talented, well-spoken, and driven delegates from around the world, it was an occasion for me to improve my public speaking and to think outside the box, to imagine innovative ideas to solve, or at least alleviate, world issues. McMUN was also an opportunity to create strong bonds with delegates from all over the globe.鈥�

鈥淚t is truly shocking to see how close you can get to someone in four short, albeit emotionally charged, days! Moreover, as Dawson鈥檚 Head Delegate, I worked to develop leadership skills and I had the privilege of getting to know both McMUN鈥檚 secretariat and Dawson delegates personally, thus making me all the more attached to and invested in the conference.鈥�

For the first time ever, DCMUN students will be headed to Massachusetts to attend the Harvard National Model United Nations conference Feb. 15 -18. They will also be attending other local college and university conferences throughout the semester.

Don鈥檛 miss Leopoldstadt: on now through Feb. 17

Sir Tom Stoppard鈥檚 play Leopoldstadt had its Canadian premiere at the 星空传媒视频 Theatre on Feb. 7. Directed by Matt Holland, the play features the 2024 graduating class of Dawson鈥檚 Professional Theatre program. Shows are happening on Feb. 8-9-10 and Feb. 15-16-17.

Here鈥檚 what one student acting in the play said about it: "I think audiences can look forward to being thrown off. It's funny, it's sad, it's a family story. Families have history: they have fights, they have losses, they have good moments, and each member just wants to be a part of it." - Frida Flores

Push-up challenge for staff and students

From now through Feb. 23, all staff and students are invited to participate in the Push-up Challenge.

The challenge is to get moving and improve your mental and physical health by doing 2,000 push-up's. Feel free听 to do lunges, squats , skipping rope, jumping jacks, whatever works for you! You do what you can/want.

"We have 56 students who鈥檝e signed up at the push up station and have already surpassed the 2K community goal with a whopping 2,575 reps," reported Rhea Gurnagul on Feb. 6. There are several teams and individuals who are participating.
