Thirteen Dawson students spent their summer working on real research projects in various fields of neuroscience.
There were eight projects in partnership with Polytechnique/Ste-Justine, MNI, Douglas Institute, McGill departments of Physiology and of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. According to Neuroscience Research Group coordinator H茅l猫ne Nadeau: 鈥渟ome projects used images from dMRI, EEG, MRI, fMRI, MR spectroscopy, or PET modalities to probe questions related to the health of neonates, to audition in the normal population, or to pathologies such as schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, or Alzheimer鈥檚 disease.
鈥淥ther聽projects relied on experiments on mice or rats, to better understand physiological mechanisms related to pathologies. In the course of the academic year, several teams worked on a large array of projects combining behavioural and EEG data.鈥�

Students applying for admission to CEGEP in the Fall of 2024 have a new option at Dawson in science.
The College plans to offer 70 seats in a new-to-Dawson pre-university program entitled Science, Computer Science and Mathematics (program code 200.C1).

The First Peoples鈥� Centre hosted a traditional moose field dressing and cookout on the west grounds of the College on Oct. 24. Under the guidance of elders and knowledge holders, Cree, Inuit and Kanien始keh谩隇塳a students participated in the preparation, while welcoming other members of the Dawson community to participate as well. Over the course of the day, students from many communities were able to reconnect with customs not commonly practiced in our urban setting.
Tiawent铆:non Canadian of the First Peoples鈥� Centre oversaw the planning of the successful event that will generate other learning opportunities over semesters to come. This winter, students will tan the moose hide during an outdoor activity, and Brian Mader of the Environmental Science program will use the moose skull for a biology course activity. The food prepared during this initiative will feed students at the First Peoples鈥� Centre well into the winter semester.
The First Peoples鈥� Centre thanks Living Campus and the Dawson Foundation for providing a chest freezer for food storage following the event.

Gender Matters is a unique W24 course that brings W/GS students and faculty into a learning community (LC) to explore how gender shapes our individual lives, societal institutions and the systems of privilege and exploitation that mark our world.
The course will be led next semester by Cinema | Communications teacher Kim Simard, but once again we are planning to bring together a diverse team of guest teachers to join her. The goal is to offer a real LC experience to W/GS students to deepen their appreciation of the value of exploring gender聽inequality and its seeming intractability from a diversity of disciplines and methodologies.
Please note that聽to participate you need not currently have a course listed with the women鈥檚/gender聽studies certificate but must have some experience with the field.聽For those聽who have already participated and would like to do the same or similar this year, please send a short email confirming your interest.

The Dawson community is invited to once again make a child鈥檚 wish for Santa come true by participating in the Batshaw Youth and Family Centres annual Holiday Gift Campaign. The goal is to provide gifts and needed items for approximately 1,500 children aged 0-17 who are under Youth Protection in the Montreal region, including children in foster care and group homes.

Erin Barker鈥檚 talk at Ped Day on Oct. 13 helped the audience understand the psychological stage that most of our students are in: emerging adulthood, which is from 18 years old to the late 20s.
At this age, young adults are 鈥渘ot fully independent, but they are less dependent. It is an age of feeling in between, of instability,鈥� developmental psychologist Erin Barker said.

English teacher Michelle Syba鈥檚 book of stories, End Times, is up for the Quebec Writers鈥� Federation Concordia University First Book Prize. End Times (Freehand Books, 2023 [link below]) is a collection of stories about people variously entangled with evangelical culture.
Michelle was raised evangelical but left the faith in university, going on to complete a PhD in English at Harvard. She remains fascinated by the culture and more generally by people of faith. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a lot that secular folks don鈥檛 get about people of faith and vice versa,鈥� she reflects. 鈥淚n many ways the stories are about the human impulse to feel you're right. What鈥檚 great about fiction is that it鈥檚 a space where I can experience uncertainty about my judgments in a highly pleasurable way.鈥�
To celebrate , members from the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) were in Ottawa this week to speak with MPs, senators and their staff about the MRT profession and the need for federal investments and leadership to help address the MRT workforce challenges throughout Canada at CAMRT's Hill Day.

Dawson鈥檚 K-Pop dance team, IntenCITY, under Campus Life, was featured on the front page of The Montreal Gazette on Nov. 1. The dancers hosted a Random Dance Play activity where snippets of K-Pop songs are played. If you know the choreography of the dance, you jump onto the dance floor and dance in unison. The activity always brings a lot of spectators and of course, K-Pop dance fanatics.
鈥淒awson has competed in the Intercollegiate Triple Crown K-Pop Dance competition the last four years,鈥� said Michelle Lee of the Campus Life team in Student Services. 鈥淲e brought home the trophy the last two years. We compete against Vanier, Marianopolis, Champlain, John Abbott, and last year, Br茅beuf was included. Each school performs three dances. Dawson鈥檚 team, IntenCITY, is strong again this year and is working hard to hold onto the trophy at the 2024 competition.鈥�
People of all ethnic backgrounds are part of this community, not only Koreans, Michelle says.
Charles Brisson (third-year student in 3D Animation and Computer Generated Imagery) and Nemesis Jarry (Class of 2023- Arts, Literature and Communication 鈥� Literature) are two of three finalists for the Quebec Writers Federation College Writers Award.
The winner will be announced at a gala on Nov. 13.

Sonia Zylberberg (Faculty, Religion) is crocheting earrings to raise money for Dawson鈥檚 Financial Aid Food Bank.
This initiative began in the Women's/Gender Studies community, and they would like to invite the Dawson Community to participate as well.
鈥淲ith rises in the cost of groceries, the need is greater now than ever. Order these earrings in the colour of your choice and help students in need,鈥� wrote Johanne Rabbat, Coordinator of Women鈥檚/Gender Studies and Chair of the Religion Department.
The suggested price is $5 per earring or $10 for a pair. If you can afford to pay more, please do because all money collected will go to the Food Bank.

Scholars of Shirley Jackson are quick to note her influence on contemporary horror and gothic literature. From overt references to subtle nods and barely visible traces, Jackson's oeuvre continues to resurface with a haunting persistence. This is fitting in that Jackson's own work is full of allusions that tempt her readers to pursue tangled webs of association and signification. This talk will consider Jackson's intertextuality from both of these angles and introduce Monstrum 6.2 (December 2023), Shirley Jackson: Intertexts and Afterlives.
