Four teachers honoured with Teaching Excellence Award

Four outstanding teachers at Dawson received the Director General鈥檚 Teaching Excellence Award on the occasion of Ped Day on Oct. 13:

  • Hannah Heath-Engel (Biomedical Laboratory Technology)
  • Audrey Juhasz (Mathematics)
  • Roger Machaalani (Chemistry)
  • Nicola Martino (Italian).

Crowds of prospective students at Open House

Dawson鈥檚 Open House was Oct. 22 and thousands of prospective students and their families took us up on the invitation.

Sunday was a record crowd, according to organizer Carey-Ann Pawsey of the Communications Office and Geoff Kloos of Student Services, two staff members who have more than two decades of Dawson Open House experience.

The last time the College opened up without appointments was in 2019. That year, 14,000 Viewbooks were distributed. To be more sustainable, guests were invited to see the Viewbook online.

In the morning, guests arrived for tours and program experiences by appointment and in the afternoon, doors were open to all to come in and speak with teachers at program booths and ask questions to academic advisors. There were close to 2,000 people who went on student-guided tours, 700 at the Science info sessions and 300 at program experiences.听 The Science webinar on Oct. 18 and the How to Apply webinar on Oct. 24 drew a total of 600 participants online.

鈥淚 would like to sincerely thank everyone who gave up their Sunday to welcome our future students and their parents to Dawson,鈥� said Megan Ainscow, Head of Communications. 鈥淲e have an amazing team of colleagues at Dawson who go above and beyond to make this event possible. We feel very grateful.鈥�

The next Open House will be Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024.

Mitchell Rae Yang is the new Director of the Dawson Foundation

The 星空传媒视频 Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Mitchell Rae Yang as Director.听 Mitchell鈥檚 first day at Dawson will be Wednesday, November 1.

Field trip to Canadore College

Jenn de Vera, Sophie La Font and Chris Adam of Dawson's Office of Sustainability were in North Bay, Ontario this week to visit .

"Dawson is entering an exciting partnership with Canadore that will further define what it is it be a Living Campus that offers high impact practices, research and experiential learning to reconnect people, community and Nature," Chris Adam said before the team left.

Indigenous youth share postcard series at Ped Day

One of the workshops at Dawson鈥檚 2023 Ped Day on Oct. 13 was Indigenous Youth Perspectives: Community Care and Practical Strategies, Bettering the Student Experience.

Two young people who are part of the presented a , one of the tools they have created to express themselves and to get people thinking and discussing.

This group has been meeting online and in person for a few years. S茅bastien Lamarre-Tellier, a medical student at McGill University, is Innu and a member of the network鈥檚 youth advisory committee. Sebastien told that they have been 鈥渃oming together to share our cultures, be visible and make some noise to show that our cultures are alive and growing.鈥�

The postcard that stood out for many at Dawson was one with an image of two people in a canoe at the centre. The centre is bright and focused on Nature with positive words emphasized. The city and negative elements are there but in the background.

S茅bastien said that young Indigenous people 鈥渘eed to express ourselves.鈥� He also said they are looking for a guide in a teacher, someone 鈥渢o walk in the forest with them.鈥� The image of the canoe has the elder or the teacher in the back helping to steer.

Call for proposals for the Student Academic Enrichment Fund

There is an open call for proposals for funding from the Student Academic Enrichment Fund of the Dawson Foundation. Staff and current students are eligible to apply. Applications for projects beginning in the Winter 2024 semester will open on Thursday, October 26 and close on Friday, November 17.

The fund has up to $40,000 available for projects commencing in the Winter 2024 semester. The objective is to fund approximately eight to ten projects. There is an option available which allows applicants to request up to three years of funding for recurring projects.

Save the date for Intercollegiate Ped Days

Intercollegiate Ped Days will be online January 9-10, 2024.

The theme is Shifting Landscapes: Shared Practices in a Changing CEGEP System.

The introduction of Bill 96 (Law 14), undertaking multiple large program revisions, and witnessing a tectonic shift in teaching and learning due to a surge in generative AI - This year's theme crosses disciplinary boundaries to explore what it means to embrace and enact meaningful transformation in the English-language CEGEP system.

Keynote presenter Ollivier Dyens is full professor in the D茅partement des litt茅ratures de langue fran莽aise, de traduction et de cr茅ation at McGill. He examines the impact of technology on humanity and has authored 14 books. He was previously Deputy Provost, Student Life and Learning at McGill.

Certificates offer students from all programs the opportunity聽to interact in a learning community of fellow students and teachers who share a passion for thinking about and finding solutions for specific historical and contemporary issues.聽Students currently can take along with their DEC a certificate in Women鈥檚/Gender Studies, Hellenic Studies, Peace Studies, Decolonization and Indigenization Studies, SPACE: Arts and Sciences, and Environment and Sustainability.

French teacher and poet launches book

Marc-Andr茅 L茅vesque, a college French instructor, will release his fifth book of poetry, 罢谤颈肠茅谤补迟辞辫肠补苍辞苍, in October. The book will be available in stores beginning October 17. A launch event was held Oct. 19 at the Atomic Caf茅.

The book explores the theme of an impending apocalypse caused by dinosaurs reappearing on Earth, with everyday experiences related to dinosaurs forming the basis for most of the poems. The collection is written entirely in French, and includes several neologisms and a few citations in English.

Henry The V rehearsals have begun

The third-year students from the Professional Theatre Program have started practicing for Shakespeare's Henry V. This bilingual version is thrilling, featuring both English and French language texts.

The lead role of Henry, affectionately known as Hal, is portrayed by a group of five actors. Here, Henry invades France to rightfully claim his throne. Directed by Michael E. Hughes, the show will run from November 13 to November 25 at 7:30 PM. Ticket sales will begin in November.

PAY WHAT YOU CAN PREVIEWS will be held on Monday, November 13 and Tuesday, November 14.

Dawson students, staff, and faculty can attend for $5, while regular admission is $15 and students/seniors pay $1.

Toward 1,000 species on campus

The Dawson Community continues to observe and log new observations into our community entitled 星空传媒视频 -Campus Biodiversity Network.

Everyone is welcome to join and all observations within the Dawson campus automatically count for our 1,000 Species in 1,000 Days.

The current total sits at 817 species on Dawson's downtown city block campus. In the last two weeks, we had:

  • 16 observations
  • 6 new species
  • 1 new observer
