Four Dawson students presented abstract at Lunar and Planetary Science conference

When it was time to submit an abstract to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas, the Dawson student team was not sure which category described them best.

鈥淚 think we are the first CEGEP students to present research at the LPI! Undergraduate was the category closest to us,鈥 said Darcy Loane-Billings (Pure & Applied Science), lead author of the abstract and second-year student at Dawson.

DawsCon, A.I. workshops and Data Journalism challenge this weekend

On Friday, March 24, 星空传媒视频 will be hosting a free conference for educators and industry, and a subsequent weekend聽Data Journalism Challenge聽(March 25-26) aimed at students聽of any background.

Attendees will be exposed to a wide range of AI topics from challenges of ChatGPT in education to ethics and bias to data manipulation and machine learning, to opportunities for faculty research and student internships.

Presentations will be given by Dawson students, alumni and faculty from the AI Community of Practice as well as partner organizations, external researchers and industry professionals.

VIB Tour stops at Dawson March 29

A fun and free event promoting well-being for all and physical fitness is coming to Dawson Wednesday, March 29 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. in 3C.1.

Students are invited to for . The program includes Pound (鈥渞ocking out鈥) fitness sessions, glow-in-the-dark yoga, free snacks and fun. If there is space, staff are also welcome to attend.

鈥淭he VIB tour only makes a few campus stops every year so I think Dawson students are lucky to have this opportunity,鈥 said Julie Gosselin of Student Health Services, Dawson鈥檚 VIB coordinator. The event is sponsored by the RSEQ, Sports Experts and the Quebec Government.

25th Edition of Artists in Bloom is April 20

Springtime means that Artists in Bloom is back! The event will be in-person on Thursday, April 20 at 5:30 p.m. in 3C.1 It will also be possible to buy prints online from April 11-28. This year will be the fundraising event鈥檚 25th annual edition鈥 a quarter century! We are excited to welcome you to the event and to see what our talented student artists will produce. Advance tickets are only $20 and will be for sale as of Monday, March 27 in 2E.6 and 4A.1 Your ticket gives you entrance to the event, one drink and hors d'oeuvres.

Ryan Christopher Churchill (Creative Arts, 1999) is the screenwriter of Simulant, a science fiction thriller that will be released in Canada on April 7.

Simulant tells the story of a humanoid A.I.'s attempt to win over a widow's heart, which places it in the path of a government agent trying to stop the rise of machine consciousness. The film stars some of the most popular actors right now: Simu Liu, Sam Worthington, Jordana Brewster and Robbie Amell.聽The trailer can be viewed .

Hockey icon Larry Robinson to join Dawson’s golf tournament

Exciting news! Hockey legend and 10-time Stanley Cup champion, Larry Robinson, will be joining golfers at the 2023 Dawson Golf Classic, sponsored by the Montreal Forum and Luxury in Transit. The tournament will be held at the beautiful Summerlea Golf Club in Vaudreuil-Dorion on Thursday, June 8.

After the tournament, participants will enjoy a night of networking, cocktails, and delicious food hosted by CTV Montreal's Christine Long and chaired by Honorary President Fr茅d茅rique Guay. Professional Theatre presents Watching Shadows March 22-25

The disappearance of Rakel, a young Norwegian girl, while on an exchange trip to Italy sends her friends and family into a whirlwind of emotions. As the days pass and the tension rises, they are faced with unknown emotions and grief, all reacting in different ways while confronting the harsh reality of the world they live in. Watching Shadows is performed by the second-year students and directed by Stefanie Buxton.

The play runs from Wednesday, March 22 鈥 Saturday, March 25 at 8 p.m. at Dawson's Theatre.

Foundation welcomes new board member

Jennifer Horvath has joined the Dawson Foundation as a new board member. Sitting uniquely at the intersection of business and social impact, Jennifer is an impact entrepreneur with almost three decades of experience in acquiring, founding and building businesses. Jennifer is certified in Impact Economics, which uses the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint to develop an ESG strategic plan while improving business success. Co-founder and Managing Partner of MaverikX, Jennifer holds a Bachelor鈥檚 degree in Religious Studies from Concordia University. Dawson鈥檚 Communications Office asked her some questions about her decision to serve on the Foundation Board.

5th annual SPACE writing competition: winners and honourable mentions

In 2022-2023, SPACE held its fifth annual writing competition. Students from all disciplines across 星空传媒视频 were invited to submit writing that offered a personal interpretation of this year鈥檚 theme,聽?听The submissions were divided into three categories鈥撯損rose (fiction and creative non-fiction), poetry and essay鈥撯揳nd were judged in a blind fashion by Lois Valliant (retired Faculty, Fine Arts) and Hannah Rahimi (Faculty, English).

Entries were evaluated according to originality and depth of thought, style, arts-sciences connections and relation to the theme. The winners received gift certificates from Argo Bookstore, and the winners and honourable mentions have been published and highlighted in the SPACE web magazine.

Stay tuned as well for the announcement of a public reading by the winners and honourable mentions during the first week of May for SPACE Week.

Dawson AI guiding College through challenges of Chat GPT

At this point, you鈥檝e surely heard of , the A.I. text generation system developed by OpenAI. Perhaps you are even a little sick of hearing about it already!

For better or worse, ChatGPT and its soon to be released, much more powerful cousin GPT-4, will have dramatic consequences for higher education. Members of the Dawson A.I. Initiative have already offered and will continue to organize various activities and workshops for faculty, staff and students at the College to map out the constructive uses and concerning challenges that these machine learning/text generation systems pose.
