Dear Joe Rose: a Dawson love story

The Dear Joe Rose project started with a rose tattoo in 2011. A student of Kim Simard鈥檚 showed her his tattoo and shared the story of . He was working to get a plaque installed in the Conrod鈥檚 student space at Dawson in honour and memory of Joe. This plaque was installed in 2013.

Visual Arts student chosen for residency at the MMFA

Dawson Visual Arts student Rowan Michael Draper has been selected for a prestigious residency for young digital artists at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

Starting March 6, Rowan will be spending between two to four hours a week at the museum with access to a studio and the museum鈥檚 technological equipment. The residency is until June.

Meet Dawson鈥檚 first 2SLGBTQIA+ Community Worker

On Jan. 9, James McKye began a new professional role as a Social Services Officer on the Student Services team at Dawson. Working closely with the First-Year Students鈥� Office, Health Services, Counselling, AccessAbility and the First Peoples鈥� Centre, the purpose of James鈥� role is to provide greater support to students experiencing challenges related to issues that impact members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.

James brings over a decade of community work experience to Dawson. Most recently, he worked in front line intervention and education facilitation at Cactus Montr茅al. His first job at Dawson will be to carve out this new service for students, believed to be a first in the CEGEP network. He is excited to collaborate with stakeholders, such as the Dawson Student Union, and colleagues. In a few months, there will be a new Advocacy Centre for Gender and Sexuality in the 2E hallway where you will be able to drop in and say hi.

Strategic Plan Consultations and Teams Site

As part of the development of the 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, consultations across the Dawson Community have been ongoing since Winter 2022. Departments, programs, students, and the full range of services and units that support the college's academic mission have been queried on student success, the Graduate Profile, Dawson's values and a new set of strategic orientations for the next five years.

If you'd like an update on the activities and progress of the Strategic Plan Working Group and Writing Committee, to view posts on the timeline for development of the plan and on some of the draft components developed so far. Feedback is welcome in the form of public comments on the posts.

The Strategic Plan Writing Committee is led by听Leanne Bennett, Academic Dean, and includes Sameer Bhatnagar, Quality Assurance and Planning; Cathy Giulietti, Executive Assistant, Academic Dean; Dianne Hawryluck, Academic Advising; Ian MacKenzie, Faculty; 听and Alan Stewart, Assistant to the Academic Dean.

Systemic Racism in Youth Protection: A Dialogue Between Black and Indigenous Communities Feb. 27

In celebration of Black History Month, the Center of Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR) and the Institute for Research and Education on Race Relations (IRERR) will host a forum on Monday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. in 4C.1 at Dawson on the common experiences and barriers of systemic discrimination faced by members of Indigenous and Black communities, as documented by the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal, the Laurent Commission on youth protection reform and the Quebec Human Rights and Youth Commission and other organizations.

Vigil held at Dawson for MMIWGT2S

The First People鈥檚 Centre organized a vigil in the Oliver鈥檚 student space at Dawson on Feb. 14 to commemorate the MMIWGT2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirited.) There is an epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls 听that Indigenous women and girls make up 24 per cent of female homicide victims in Canada, despite only making up four per cent of the country鈥檚 female population.

The report cited research that 鈥淚ndigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women. 鈥� Other than murder, statistics also reveal how Indigenous women consistently experience higher rates and more severe forms of physical assault and robbery than other groups in Canada. Sexual violence is a huge problem in all its forms: Indigenous women are sexually assaulted three times more often than non-Indigenous women, and most of the women and children trafficked in Canada are Indigenous.鈥�

An evening with Oliver Jones at Dawson March 10

Honouring legendary Montrealer and musician Oliver Jones and inspiring students are the objectives of a special evening being organized by members of Dawson鈥檚 Legacy Club with support from Dawson staff, including the Campus Life and Leadership team, Community, Recreation and Leadership Training, Continuing Education and Community Services and the Communications Office.

鈥淥liver grew up in the Little Burgundy neighbourhood, home to the historic Union United Church, which is very close to the former Selby Campus of 星空传媒视频," said Simeon Pompey of the organizing committee. "Through his work/fame, he has influenced a lot of young Black people in Little Burgundy and Montreal to pursue higher education. It is very fitting that the College has endorsed the initiative to honour him.

鈥淒irectly and indirectly, young people鈥檚 lives were positively impacted. Through his charity work, Dr. Jones supported initiatives to help youth pursue post-secondary education.鈥�

The evening will include performances, tributes and opportunities for students to ask Dr. Jones questions. There will be guests from community organizations but the VIPs will be Black Dawson students and students who are personally invited.

New Faculty Orientation is March 14

The next New Faculty Orientation will be held in person on March 14 from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in room 3F.37.

Dawson鈥檚 New Faculty Orientation is designed to introduce new faculty to information about college services and procedures, teaching at the college level, and tips for engaging students.

The orientation includes asynchronous and synchronous components:

Dawson Reads with Heather & Arizona O鈥橬eill March 22

Montreal literary duo and Dawson graduates Heather O鈥橬eill (Social Science, 1992) and Arizona O'Neill听(Fine Arts, 2013) will be at the College on March 22 to speak about听their lives听and read from their work. The event takes place in 4C.1 and begins at 12 p.m.

Thank you for your contributions to Winter Open House

Dawson's Winter 2023 Open House held on Feb. 8 was a success by all accounts, with a steady and large stream of prospective students milling around the campus and avidly interested in all that Dawson has to offer. The Communications Office would like to thank all who volunteered their time at the welcome tables, Facilities Management staff for preparation and take down in common areas, our cafeteria staff for the delicious prepared meals, and our faculty, student volunteers, Student Services staff and advisors who provided valuable interaction and information to prospective students throughout the evening.

Flood update from FAMA

After the flooding at Dawson on February 4, images were shared on social media depicting water with a greenish or grey colour.听 This colour comes from an eco-friendly colorant that allows maintenance teams to detect leaks and the liquid was non-toxic.

The water was all cleaned up on the same Saturday and a combination of blowers and dehumidifiers were installed right away, which prevented opportunities for mold to grow.

The Facilities Management team is working with the restoration company, First on Site.

After assessment, which includes humidity and air quality readings, four teaching spaces and two teachers鈥� offices along with some walls along various hallways require further remediation due to water which infiltrated the walls but is now removed. At this time, there are no environmental issues related to the flood. The rooms are expected to be back in use in about a week

Policy for new electric vehicle charging stations

There are four electric charging stations on two towers in Dawson鈥檚 P1 parking lot, the first lot to the right upon entering the parking entrance by the daycare.

Some key things to know:

  • Require a Flo card or Flo app
  • Dawson鈥檚 stations will not appear on the Flo app while there is no charge
  • Compatible with BEV and PHEV vehicles
  • No cost for charging during introductory period
  • Community will be informed when charges will apply
  • Reserved exclusively for appropriate vehicles
  • Maximum parking time is four hours
  • First-come, first-served basis
  • Facilities Management team counting on the community to use the charging stations properly
  • To access the stations, email Jorge Sanchez
