Meet Dawson鈥檚 Fall 2022 Awards recipients! They are all current students at Dawson in a wide range of programs. These students are distinguished by involvement in the Dawson community, giving back or academic excellence and perseverance. Congratulations to our students and many thanks to all the donors and staff who make these awards possible.

At the celebration held on Nov. 24, we marked the 40^th anniversary of the Anne-Marie Howlett Memorial Award, the inauguration of the Harry Fainsilber Memorial Award, given in memory of a beloved Dawson Mathematics teacher, and the return of the Dawson Teachers鈥� Union Polytechnique Memorial Scholarship.

Everyone wants more interprofessional education- feedback about learning last semester

This semester, the Interprofessional Education team has implemented many successful learning opportunities for the medical technology and health students. As always, the team鈥檚 mission is to create and implement IPE learning opportunities that help the students learn with, from, and about each other in order to improve the quality of patient/client care.

The Romany Eveleigh gift for students of the arts

Dawson students received an early holiday gift this week: a $50,000 donation to seed awards, scholarships and grants for students in the arts. Details of the first award, honouring the late filmmaker and Dawson Cinema | Communication鈥檚 alumni Jeff Barnaby, will be published in the new year. Open to all Arts, Literature and Communication students, the award will grant $3,000 a year to graduating students for film production projects.

DTU Award goes to student with don鈥檛-give-up message

The Dawson Teachers鈥� Union Polytechnique Memorial Scholarship is given to a student who has shown a commitment to persevering and overcoming obstacles within their field.

This year, the award was given to Fred-Dgennie Louis, a student in Computer Science, who said: 鈥淚t means a lot and I am very grateful. It was the least thing I expected since figuring out my path and where I wanted to go has been a struggle. You know after high school, you鈥檙e thrown into a completely new environment, and you鈥檙e just expected to go on, graduate and then go to university.鈥�

Mitacs honours Joel Trudeau and Dawson team

Retired Academic Dean Bob Kavanagh gave a great report on the Mitacs Awards evening on Nov. 22 on his Facebook page. Mitacs Awards is one of Canada's premier innovation celebrations. The ceremony was broadcast live from the National Arts Centre in Ottawa and recognized groundbreaking research is fostering innovation and growth in our nation.

Work can overcome talent in math says Harry Fainsilber recipient

The inaugural Harry Fainsilber Memorial Award was given to Parnia Akhavansaffar at the Fall Awards Night on Nov. 24. Several family members of the beloved Mathematics teacher who passed away in 2015 were in attendance.

Dawson students win gold & silver at industrial design competition

Twenty-eight Dawson students in various programs participated in the very first industrial design contest entitled L'Odyss茅e de L'Objet en 48h, which took place Nov. 4-6 at C茅gep de Vieux Montr茅al.听Dawson students won five of the eight categories on composting, a theme that was only revealed on day one of the competition.

Two more students continue legacy of Anne-Marie Howlett鈥檚 passion for nursing

At Fall Awards Night on Nov. 24, Susan and Michael Howlett were at Dawson for the presentation of the Anne-Marie Howlett Memorial Award in honour of their late sister and daughter, who was in her first year of Nursing when she passed away tragically 40 years ago.

Dawson team reunites to use their CERN particle physics kit prize

In early November, there was a reunion of the 2021-鈥�22 Dawson High Energy Particle听(HEP)听Physics Group. The occasion was receiving (and experimenting with) their prize pack from CERN's Annual Beamline 4 Schools Competition.

Teachers involved in active learning share experiences in video

Dawson faculty members share their experiences about adopting active learning pedagogy and some examples of how it enriches learning in a bilingual video made on the occasion of the 10^th anniversary of the Dawson Active Learning Community (DALC). The video features interviews with Jean-Fran莽ois Bri猫re (Physics), Daniel Goldsmith (Humanities),听Selma Hamdani (Psychology), Carmen Leung (Chemistry), and Jocelyn Parr (History).

Milestones

New faces in OAD

The Office of Academic Development welcomes new team members. Tannia Ditchburn, Pedagogical Counsellor - Program Life Cycle, started in mid-November. Tannia comes with 20 years of teaching experience in high school, a number of years of experience as a pedagogical counselor at Mariannopolis and Vanier College, and studies in the field of education. She will be supporting programs in the processes of program revision, course design and eventually program evaluation.

On Nov. 29, Kanerahtiio Hemlock, Pedagogical Counsellor 鈥� Indigenous Pedagogy began a Special Project at Dawson. Kanerahtiio brings 15 years of experience in teaching in Kahnawake education. He has already worked as an Indigenous pedagogical consultant at Dawson a few years ago and has been a consultant for various colleges and universities. He will be working on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. His primary responsibility will be to provide support to faculty in Indigenous pedagogical approaches and resources, indigenization and decolonization.

Carole Duplantie has also joined the Team as Administrative secretary in mid-November. Carole has experience in diverse departments at the College, and has been in an administrative secretary role in other positions.

Dawson community sponsoring over 100 Batshaw kids; still need for more

To date, individual Dawson employees and teams have committed to sponsor gifts for over 100 kids as part of the Batshaw Youth and Family Centres annual Holiday Gift Campaign. There are still many children's files left at Batshaw and there is still time to participate.

Deadline extended for applications to Student Academic Enrichment Fund

A new fund available through the Dawson Foundation by and for students, the Dawson Student Academic Enrichment Fund, has extended the application deadline to Friday, December 9. Projects selected in this round will receive funding at the beginning of the Winter 2023 semester. The fund has up to $40,000 available with the objective to fund approximately eight to ten projects.

Nomination deadline for Lieutenant Governor鈥檚 Youth Medal is Dec. 8

The purpose of the Lieutenant Governor鈥檚 Medal is to recognize the involvement, determination and constant striving of Quebecers who have a positive influence in their community or the Qu茅bec nation.

All employees can nominate a student; deadline is Dec. 8.

Languages Profile presents: Daniel Grenier: The Writer as Translator

How does one become a literary translator? To what extent is translation creative writing? How does the writer inspire and inform the translator? Celebrated writer and translator Daniel Grenier will explore these questions with us in English and in French. He will also read from his collection of short stories Malgr茅 tout on rit 脿 St Henri (2012) and from his translation of Dawn Dumont鈥檚听骋濒补蝉蝉听Beads,听Perles de Verres (2021).

Daniel Grenier was a finalist to several Governor General鈥檚 literary awards for his translations of novels by Canadian authors Andrew Forbes and Dawn Dumont and for his own works of fiction and non-fiction. He won the Prix Litt茅raire des Coll茅giens in 2016 for his novel L鈥檃nn茅e la plus longue.

This event takes place on Dec. 8 from 1-2 p.m. in the CoLab (3F.43).

Cuba fundraiser by NSS students on until Dec. 6

Students from the North-South Studies Profile are raising funds and accepting gift-in-kind donations to bring to communities in Cuba as part of their upcoming three-week trip. Accepted items include cash donations, toiletries, toys, school and medical supplies, sports equipment, small tools and clothing.

Drop off clothing & toiletries at PARC (1H) until Dec. 8

The Division 2 Women鈥檚 Basketball team, led by student-athletes Sabryna Purich and Semaeja Charlot and supported by the Athletics Department, is organizing a drive for clothing and toiletries for people in need served by Welcome Hall Mission. The connection was made through retired Student Services Coordinator Dan Boyer who is now working for Welcome Hall.

A new faculty orientation session will be held in person on Jan. 16 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.

Dawson鈥檚 New Faculty Orientation is designed to introduce new faculty to information about college services and procedures, teaching at the college-level, and tips for engaging students.

Please note that the College has received new group insurance rates from SSQ and Beneva for 2023. Please note that we are still waiting for the management group insurance rates from SSQ. These new rates will come into effect on the pay of January 19, 2023.

SALTISE webinar on Dec. 2

Picking up from the 2022 SALTISE Conference and the insights from Dr. Gomez鈥檚 webinar on Oct. 6, our panel of emerging researchers reunite to critically explore their own experiences of collaborative design in education, research and teaching. From educational innovation projects to STEM research on perinatal trauma, these emerging scholars explore the messiness of collaborating across people, time and space. This talk is inspired by the following questions: what partnerships emerge in the process of centering inclusive and equitable pedagogies? What biases disrupt these partnerships? What conditions enable these partnerships to create sustainable pedagogical change?

Model UN students attended CCMUN & SSUNS

Our DCMUN (星空传媒视频 Model United Nations) executive team (Aidan Byrne, Nica Calandriello, Sanjana Deb, Sydney Levitt, Mathis Paquin, and Bryan Vu) prepared a rigorous fall training schedule for new and returning delegates, culminating in an all-day United Nations General Assembly simulation. DCMUN welcomed the return of in-person conferences, with delegates attending CCMUN (Champlain College) and SSUNS (McGill University) where their diplomacy and research skills were commended. Our delegates look forward to competing in the winter conference season, with travel to national and international conferences planned.

Pareidola: 星空传媒视频 Professional Photography Vernissage

Pareidolia is the ability to see or make pictures out of randomness. Seeing beyond what the average person sees and expressing that vision in an image is a large part of training to be a photographer. This collection of work by Dawson鈥檚 third-year photography students embodies how they see people, places or objects in their world.

Twenty-two Dawson students will be showcasing their work at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery from Dec. 9-15, their vernissage will be held on Dec. 8 from 6-9 p.m.

Dawson Remembers, Milestones

In memoriam: Mara Gutmanis Grey

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of retired English teacher Mara Gutmanis Grey, just a couple of months shy of her 83rd birthday.

Mara passed November 15 at St. Mary's Hospital, in the company of her family, after several months of illness. A memorial has not yet been planned. Details will be announced once received by her family.

Mara taught in the English Department from the early 1970s until 2008, specializing in Poetry, and Latin and African American Literature. She completed a Ph.D. dissertation called The Jazz Voice: Rewriting the Poetic Voice in American Modernism.

After retiring from Dawson, she enjoyed African drumming and dance, travel, working on a novel, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
