Senate has recommended new Social Science Program

Dawson will have a brand new Social Science Program! After three years of work, the input of more than 100 teachers and professionals, and consultation with universities and other stakeholders and partners, the Senate of 星空传媒视频 decided to recommend the revision of the pre-university program at their Sept. 20 meeting. It will be presented to Dawson鈥檚 Board of Governors for formal approval on Oct. 12 and Dawson expects to welcome its first cohort in the Fall of 2023.

The Viewbook and the website are being updated and will reflect the new program and its profiles in October.

Support Staff Appreciation Week begins Sept. 26. Register now for activities leading up to Orange Shirt Day

On Friday, Sept. 30, the Dawson community will observe Orange Shirt Day鈥擭ational Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The events are part of a semester-long series to bring awareness to the legacy of colonization across Turtle Island, the necessity of institutional decolonization, as well as Indigenous resurgence and joy.

Financial Aid Food Bank needs our help!

The Financial Aid Food Bank is always in need of non-perishable food items to replenish the shelves. Donations can be dropped off in the bin at 4.E2. The Financial Aid office is grateful to all our regular providers and hope that the Peace Week Giving Tree near the cafeteria entrance in the Upper Atrium will be a great success.聽 Breakfast items are greatly needed. Here are some ideas for your donations: boxed nut and oat milks, juice, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, nut spreads, jelly, Nutella, graham crackers, melba toast, instant coffee, tea, hot chocolate powder, pop tarts, granola.

Six provincial candidates came to Dawson for an election debate

Following a long-standing tradition at Dawson, six provincial election candidates from the Ville-Marie riding were invited to answer questions from the Dawson community about the future of young anglophone and allophone Quebecers on Tuesday.

Award-winning journalist and Dawson alumnus Christopher Curtis moderated the debate between J茅r茅my C么t茅 (Qu茅bec Solidaire), Bonnie Feigenbaum (Conservative Party), Balarama Holness (Bloc Montreal), D茅sir茅e McGraw (Quebec Liberal Party), Colin Standish (Quebec Canadian Party) and Alex Tyrell (Green Party).

The well-attended event was organized by the Dawson Student Union in collaboration with the Law, Society and Justice Profile and the Peace Centre. The candidates each addressed their respective parties' plans to tackle issues surrounding national identity, multiculturalism, environmental policy and climate change.

Dawson religion teacher to share India field trip

My name is Phil Lagace, and I teach here at 星空传媒视频 through the Religion Department. From the end of this month until mid-December, I鈥檒l be in India conducting fieldwork for my doctoral program.

My plan is to provide the Dawson community entertaining and educational updates during this time abroad! My PhD research centers on Ardhan膩r墨艣vara, a Hindu deity split into male and female halves by a vertical axis. Among other things, I鈥檒l examine elaborate temples dedicated to this figure and analyze its place within extravagant Hindu festivals. One such festival, Durg膩 P奴j膩, will begin soon after I arrive in India.

Durg膩 P奴j膩 is celebrated most vibrantly in the city of Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. Fortunately, that鈥檚 exactly where I鈥檒l be for the festivities, so stay tuned for a fascinating first field report and expect breathtaking images from this annual celebration!

70 Dawson students signed up for AI workshops this fall

Dawson AI and are hosting a series of workshops, which will give Dawson students the opportunity to learn AI through hands-on learning. The workshop series will cover a wide range of AI topics including data manipulation, fundamental machine learning models, deep learning, reinforcement learning and other advanced topics.

70 Dawson students are signed up to take part in the workshops. The series of eight workshops will begin this Saturday, Sept. 24 and end on Nov. 19. Students will have the opportunity to present their work and learnings at the end of the program.

This workshop series is available to college students in Quebec and is made possible by the generous funding of a NovaScience Program grant awarded to DawsonAI from the Minist猫re de l鈥櫭塩onomie et de l鈥橧nnovation.

The Academic Skills Centre is running a series of seven workshops to help students prepare for, take and evaluate their own performance. The workshops run from Sept. 26 through Oct. 5. Please encourage your students to sign up.

Honey extraction workshop Oct. 14

Time to reap the fruit of our labour with this very hands-on honey extraction workshop. A beekeeper will assist you over the course of this fun-filled hour as you uncap honeycomb cells, hand-spin honeycombs in the centrifugal extractor, and filter the raw honey before jarring and labelling it all! Thanks to Dawson blood donors

H茅ma-Qu茅bec held a two-day blood drive at Dawson on Sept. 13-14 and a total of 121 students and employees donated blood. Of these, 31 were first-timers! Many first-timers said it was easy and that they would do it again.

M. Lauzon of H茅ma-Qu茅bec said that they exceeded their goal of 120 donors and that it was an 鈥渆xcellent鈥� result, especially considering that they have been experiencing up to 30 per cent of no-show鈥檚 for appointments elsewhere.

Thanks to the Dawson community donors for saving lives and embodying our value of well-being of all!

The Professional Theatre Program at 星空传媒视频 is proud to present Peter and the Starcatcher. Directed by Jonathan Monro and performed by the second-year students, this adaptation of Peter Pan features music and 12 actors playing many unforgettable characters. Peter and the Starcatcher聽uses ingenious stagecraft and the limitless possibilities of imagination to bring the story to life.

OPENS TONIGHT: Wednesday, Sept 21 and runs through Sept. 24 with performances at 8 p.m. at the Dawson Theatre (on Atwater near de Maisonneuve)
