Dawson students brought petition to Quebec

Members of the Dawson Student Union were at the National Assembly on March 16 to see Member of the National Assembly for Westmount鈥揝aint-Louis Jennifer Maccarone officially present the petition, which had garnered 19,883 signatures in only three weeks! They also gave a press conference with the Leader of the Official Opposition Dominique Anglade and Jennifer Maccarone. You can watch our articulate student leaders address the Quebec media in this .

Director General Diane Gauvin will address the Quebec government鈥檚 decision on Dawson鈥檚 infrastructure project on Thursday in a letter to the Dawson community.

Applications up this year

Dawson received a total of 13,196 applications for Fall 2022.

Admissions is ongoing. The first offers went out March 8 to our automatic admits. A total of 3,996 offers of admission went out through automatics.

Science is still the most popular program. The greatest increases in number of applications are for Computer Science, Science (Environmental Science Profile), Social Science (Commerce Profile), Social Science (Child Studies) and Social Science (Psychology Profile).

Things are going very smoothly so far, reported Dean of Academic Systems Carmela Gumelli.

Sweet return for Indigenous Peoples鈥� Week March 28 – April 1

IONKWAT脫NHAHERE is a Kanien鈥檏茅ha word that means 鈥淲e are raising our Spirits.鈥� In the wake of the last two years, Indigenous communities have been re-confronted with the realities of colonialism. For this reason, the organizers of Dawson鈥檚 Indigenous Peoples鈥� Week (formally First Peoples鈥� Week) have decided to focus on celebrating the joy within our cultures, to raise our collective spirits.

Get your new branded Dawson email signature

星空传媒视频 has invested in a new refreshed brand for the College. The full impact of a brand is achieved through consistent and appropriate usage in line with the Brand Guidelines.

One of the ways we can all participate in the implementation of Dawson鈥檚 new brand is by adopting the new official 星空传媒视频 email signature.

Much thought has been put into its design and functionality. It was delivered to Dawson by the marketing company that did the branding project and was thoroughly tested by our in-house IT Solutions Team.

The official email signature is meant to be used as is. We ask that you do not re-arrange the elements, change the font or create your own version of the 星空传媒视频 email signature.

To make the change to your signature, go to the and find the the Branded Email Signature item under Non-Academic Services. There you will instructions and templates related to the way you access Outlook.

Dawson Blues Basketball teams advance to Nationals

Both the men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 Div. 1 Dawson Blues basketball teams are playing in the CCAA Nationals! They also both came in #2 in the RSEQ provincial championships.

The men鈥檚 录 final game in the nationals is against St. Clair College on March 25 at 3 p.m. EST and you can watch it live through this webcast:

The first women鈥檚 game is against Humber College and will take place on March 25 at 11 p.m. EST and you can watch it live through this webcast:

Teaching Excellence Awards are back!

In past years, nominations were held in both Fall and Winter semesters, but this year they will be held all at once. From March 21 through April 3, students and faculty may nominate a teacher who best embodies teaching excellence through their outstanding teaching performance in the classroom, lab, and/or field work.

星空传媒视频 is proud of its teachers and the Director General wants to thank them by allowing students and faculty to recognize teachers by giving them the opportunity to win an award that highlights their devoted work.

Five teachers will be selected: two in pre-university programs, one in a career program, one in general education, and one in a continuing education program (including AEC). Results will be announced in September of the following academic year during Ped Day.

More information on the criteria and procedures can be found through the in the My Dawson Life menu under Teaching Excellence Award. Please read through them carefully before you nominate a teacher. Happy voting!

Encourage a student to apply for the Raymond Ellis Memorial Award

The Awards Office is accepting applications for the Raymond Ellis Memorial Award (1 recipient of $500).

This award is named after Raymond Ellis who was killed in 2005 in a tragic case of mistaken identity. Raymond graduated from Social Science in 2001 and at the time of his passing was a local business man.

If you know a graduating Black Social Science student in good academic standing who aspires to have a career in business or as an entrepreneur and has a caring attitude toward others, please encourage them to apply through their !

Wayne Yearwood named RSEQ Coach of the Year

Congratulations to Dawson Blues Div. 1 Men's Basketball Coach Wayne Yearwood! He was named by the RSEQ as Men鈥檚 Basketball Coach of the Year.

Women’s and Gender Studies celebrated IWD 2022

To mark International Women鈥檚 Day this year, the Women鈥檚/Gender Studies students and faculty, as well as members of the larger college community, engaged in a re-naming/re-claiming activity whereby Montreal metro stations were renamed by participants after women they find inspiring.

The event, which took place on March 8, in Conrod鈥檚 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., saw participants affix labels sporting the names of their chosen inspirational figures on a large blank metro map. Some inspiring figures were drawn from contemporary cultures, while others were figures from both the distant, and the recent, past, like Betty White. Some women, like Mary Two-Axe Earley, Harriet Tubman and Angela Davis, were social activists, while others are celebrities (e.g. Oprah, Zendaya, Christiane Amanpour). Participants were also invited to complete colourful cards on why they chose their particular figures.

Over $400 was raised to benefit our Financial Aid Food Bank from a bake sale in connection with the activity where faculty and students sold baked goods, fashioned by members of our W/GS community. A button-making activity where engaged students produced their own pins sporting the W/GS logo was also quite popular!

Florence Yee: Sharp Tools for Unripe Fruit

Florence Yee is a visual artist, Dawson Alum, and serial collaborator based in Tkaronto/Toronto and Tiohti脿:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal. Their exhibition聽Sharp Tools for Unripe Fruit聽features photographs on fabric and hand-embroidered text, now on view at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery until April 14. On a recent Tuesday evening, two second-year visual art students, Sabrina Schmidt and Victoria Petrecca-Berthelet, had the chance to ask Florence (they/he) a few questions.

Get ready for Earth Week 2022 at Dawson

The Sustainability Office, in collaboration with the Peace Centre and other departments, is excited to introduce the fast-approaching Earth Week 2022, which will take place Tuesday to Friday, April 19-22. We would like to give you an opportunity to take advantage of some of the many activities we have planned. You will note that we have a mix of in-person and virtual events available.

You can roam the Lower Atrium shopping for eco-friendly products and/or take a Living Campus tour and learn about the many student-driven sustainability initiatives that have changed the campus! While there will be more to come, certain activities are dependent on direct participation. Please review your schedules, and if interested, request a booking to join us and discover our Living Campus while connecting with others from the Dawson community.

Our Earth Week theme this year is 鈥淲ell-Being for Yourself, Others, and the Environment.鈥� Inspired by the we are happy to announce that our week鈥檚 activities and events will collectively touch on all 17 SDGs.

Screening of Blood Quantum March 30

Kristopher Woofter, Rebecca Million and Ben Lander have organized a free event open to the public for Indigenous Peoples Week. The film Blood Quantum聽by local Indigenous filmmaker and Dawson graduate Jeff Barnaby will be screened and then Jeff will be there to take questions afterwards.

The event will be in the Dawson Theatre on March 30 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Save the date for Graduation

Yes! We are planning a Graduation ceremony for the first time in person since 2019! The event will take place at Place des Arts on Wednesday, June 22. Students who have completed their CEGEP studies in the Summer or Fall of 2021 and those who are on track to graduate at the end of the Winter 2022 semester will receive invitations in early April. Faculty and employees are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Second-year Theatre students star in Chaos

Second-year students of Dawson's Professional Theatre Program are presenting Chaos by Laura Lomas, directed by Stefanie Buxton.

Chaos is a series of interconnected stories, where characters search for meaning in the modern world. British playwright Laura Lomas says, "I was thinking about how I felt as a young person and how the world felt. The word "chaos" kept springing out of that. I wanted to write something in the gesture of that Chaos, as a celebration of it. ... I didn't want it to make sense, but I did want it to feel alive - all the ways I remember feeling as a teenager."

We are thrilled to welcome Caroline Blouin as the new Coordinator of Student Services. She has worked for many years at different post-secondary institutions, particularly in Ontario, in services that supported students and their academic success. We were saddened to hear of the passing earlier this month of Pat Powers, retired teacher and driving force of the New School since its inception. He was 77.

2021 Virtual Field Trip to Cuba video

During the online learning period of the pandemic, teachers had to be very resourceful and adapt their plans.

Instead of actually going to Cuba in 2021, students in the North-South Studies Profile of Social Science took a virtual field trip to Cuba thanks to an imaginative work-around developed by North-South Studies faculty and partners in Cuba.

Miriam Group back at Dawson & ready to help you!

Many people at Dawson know the Miriam Group already, but they were away for a long period due to COVID. Miriam Group鈥檚 purpose is to promote the development of work, social and interpersonal skills in an integrated work environment for people with special needs. They are back at Dawson three days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are five members, including a special care counselor who supports the group.

You are invited to get in touch with the Miriam Group if you need help with tasks, such as small amounts of paper shredding, putting up and taking down posters, flattening boxes, and/or assembling the boxes, helping in the kitchen, helping with reception at PARC, bringing things to shipping, mailings and more.

Blood drive was “immense success”

The Blood Drive at Dawson on Feb. 22-23 was an 鈥渋mmense success considering the current covid context,鈥� according to H茅ma-Qu茅bec.

A total of 108 members of the Dawson community gave blood. H茅ma-Qu茅bec wanted to thank Dawson on behalf of all the patients who will receive blood.

Give your input to Student Success Plan

Academic Dean Rob Cassidy wants to tap into the insights, ideas and experiences of the Dawson Community as work begins on the new Strategic Plan for 2023-2028.

A central component is the Student Success Plan. This is the subject of these first consultations. The first one was held on March 17 and there are two more coming up, which you are invited to attend:

  • Tuesday, March 29, 聽2:30-4:30 p.m. (room 3F.37)
  • Friday, March 25, 12-2 p.m. (room 3F.37)

In the context of supporting student success, here are the questions that will be considered:

  • Where do we need to be in five years?
  • If we are building on our strengths, what are they?
  • What weaknesses must we address?
  • What are the most significant challenges facing our students or what challenges will they face in five years?
  • How do we create educational contexts and practices that will help our students succeed?

Help us create an ambitious and attainable plan for student success at Dawson.
