Thank you Team Open House 2021

Dawson鈥檚 Open House 2021 was reimagined this year to help visitors experience the best version of the College and all it has to offer. We achieved record-breaking attendance by keeping the best elements of the first online Open House in 2020 and introducing new features and in-person tours for the first time since 2019.

Gone were the one-hour waits to have questions answered and navigating a hot, loud and crowded building. This year the maximum wait time for a question was not more than 2-3 minutes during the chat sessions for Open House on Oct. 24. Team Dawson Open House 2021 made sure the event was useful, smooth and pleasant for everyone.

Director General Diane Gauvin and Academic Dean Robert Cassidy would like to thank the more than 150 faculty members, current students and deans as well as managers, professionals and support staff from the Registrar's Office, the Communications Office, the Sustainability Office, Information Systems and Technology, Student Services, the Office of Academic Development and more.

Special thanks to Carey-Ann Pawsey, Jennifer de Vera, Lucy Segal, Ivana Bonaduce, Catherine Fusk, Marien Griffin, Dianne Hawryluck, Irene Kakoulakis, Antonina Nobile, Michele Pallett, Julie Pellegrino, Madalina Radu, Jane Valihora, Diane Wong, Carmela Gumelli, Julie Brosseau, Laura Paterson, Tommy Diamantakos, Maxwell Jones, Myl猫ne Saucier, Dana Dragomir, Donna Varrica, Christina Parsons, Jonathan Perlman, Chris Georgieff, Pat Phutthavong, Virginia Law.

Student-initiated Atwater Community Pantry fills a void

The pandemic brought food insecurity to the fore after job losses, isolation and uncertainty about the future. A group of Dawson students who saw the hardship firsthand by volunteering at the soup kitchen Resilience on the corner of Ste-Catherine and Atwater seized on an idea to create another avenue for food distribution that was anonymous, non-judgmental, accessible at all hours and throughout the four seasons.

Teaching in turbulent times: topic of Ped Day Opening Plenary

Over 160 Dawsonites attended Dr. Saul Carliner鈥檚 plenary address to kick-off Dawson鈥檚 Ped Day on Oct. 15. Carliner illustrated, through an interactive and engaging virtual presentation, that COVID is but one cause of 鈥渢urbulence鈥 in higher education, which will continue to affect the day-to-day work of teachers in the 21st century.

  • Article spotlight: 聽by Pat Romano (Humanities).

Excerpt:聽 These concerns have led us to reflect repeatedly on how we can frame these discussions in ways that can effectively engage at least a significant majority of our students in a real exploration of these divisive issues 鈥 one that may be uncomfortable and indeed take them into places where they would rather not go. In the next section you will find a brief overview of some of the conclusions we have drawn as we have discussed the difficulties and successes we have had in the classroom and mulled over the insights offered by the theory of nonviolence 鈥 its call for us to find connections across divides, its promotion of a process of social change that engages us intellectually, emotionally and creatively, and its emphasis that changes in our hearts and minds become most likely during moments where the unexpected happens.

Gustave’s visit to Dawson

Gustave (pictured) attended Dawson for a year and a half with Susan Finch (Faculty, Psychology) in his quest to be a service dog. Some of Melanie Doyle's 401 students met Gustave before the pandemic and invited him to come back on Oct. 16 as part of their service project for the course in positive psychology.

"My group was overwhelmed by the participation and shut it down two hours early after almost 100 students had visited," Melanie said. The line-up of students waiting for some one-on-one dog therapy with Gustave was down the hallway, she reported.

Policy on Sexual Violence, Sustainability, Well-being for all

SURVEYS! SURVEYS! SURVEYS!

Thank you to everyone who participated in this semester鈥檚 College-wide surveys!

We had a record number of employees fill out the survey regarding Dawson鈥檚 Policy on Sexual Violence and a healthy response rate for the Sustainability Office鈥檚 Transportation Survey.

Feedback from the community is crucial! For the former, survey data and responses will help develop recommendations to improve the policy. For the latter, seeing how students and employees commute to the College helps us see our common carbon footprint and take steps to decrease it.

Message from the Quality Assurance and Planning Office
