What does it mean to go beyond the speed of light?
TransLuminal, a multilayered, illuminated 10鈥� x 5鈥� mural that explores the delineation of boundaries and the movement beyond them, was created in the spring of 2015 as a College-wide community project. It is displayed in the 4 A/B corridor at 星空传媒视频
In March 2020, just prior to the pandemic shutdown, the lightbox was dismounted and subsequently, the electronics powering it were replaced and upgraded.
As part of the TransLuminal project relaunch, we are inviting the greater Dawson Community鈥攕tudents, faculty, staff, alumni, and others鈥攖o take part and to interpret through creative imagery and short reflections what it means to go beyond the speed of light. Curated images submitted by participants will be uploaded to the lightbox, adding a new layer of expression to this exploration of the intersections of the arts and sciences which is a hallmark of the SPACE initiative.

In the brief period when optional in-person learning activities were allowed this semester, three teachers tried out the HyFlex pedagogy, which blends on-site and online students together.

It鈥檚 an understatement to say that the last 12 months have been challenging, both at a global scale and at a local scale 鈥� including in our (now virtual) classrooms and for student learning. The 2021 SALTISE Conference (June 2-4) is an opportunity for teachers to engage with peers and researchers and to reflect on evidence-based pedagogical practices that can make teaching and learning better as we move forward. The conference is local (Montreal-based), free (no cost) and features fantastic keynote speakers, workshops and sessions.

We regret to inform you that Jim McGill passed away on May 11. Jim worked at Dawson for over three decades until he retired in June 2008. He had served as Manager of Operations in the IST Department and also worked for the Academic Dean.

A total of $ 127,250 has been distributed through the 星空传媒视频 Financial Aid Bursary (DCFAB) to 182 students to date. The average bursary was $699.
As a response to the economic hardships brought about by the pandemic, the DCFAB was set up last fall by the Dawson Student Union (DSU), the Student Services team of the College and the 星空传媒视频 Foundation (DCF). The Minist猫re de l鈥橢nseignement sup茅rieur聽has provided additional support.
鈥淲e are working to ensure that Dawson students can continue their education without interruption. The creation of the DCFAB reflects our commitment to promote excellence in education, especially during difficult times," said Ursula Cabral of the DCF.
Students can continue to apply for the bursary through the DCF website.
Donations are still needed to keep helping our students in this unprecedented situation.

Gender Matters is a unique course pairing Women鈥檚/Gender Studies students and faculty in a learning community to explore how gender shapes our individual lives, societal institutions and the systems of privilege and exploitation that mark our world. Inaugurated in Fall 2018 under the guidance of Cinema | Communications鈥� Dipti Gupta, and now lead by Emma Doubt of Fine Arts.
Central to the course is the participation of a diverse group of guest teachers who explore the problem of gender inequality, from a variety of disciplinary and methodological perspectives. With many of us spending time at home, it can be a peaceful activity to observe which birds are dropping by our backyards and windows.
Perhaps you are wondering about the birds you hear as well.
There is a great website that features an illustration of many common birds in our area. You can click on a bird and hear its song as well as see its name.
Two of the birds you can hear are the Wood Thrush and the Chestnut-sided Warbler, featured in St茅phanie Aubin's Illustration class artwork, which we featured in the last D News.聽
These two birds, which overwinter in Nicaragua, where Dawson is planting trees to offset our carbon footprint, are supposed to be returning to Montreal around this time of year.
