Governor General’s Medal recipient rowing her way to the top

Catherine Ch茅nier-Gagnon returned to 星空传媒视频 on Nov. 24 to receive the Governor General鈥檚 Collegiate Bronze Medal. Academic Dean Diane Gauvin presented the medal to Catherine at an intimate and socially distanced ceremony witnessed by her parents and a few teachers.

Carmela Gumelli to serve as Interim Academic Dean

The Board of Governors appointed Carmela Gumelli to the position of Academic Dean at their Nov. 25 meeting.

Carmela will serve an interim term from Jan. 1- June 30, 2021. With the support of the managers in the Registrar鈥檚 Office and her fellow deans, Carmela will continue as Dean of Academic Systems while taking on this new role.

After working as a teacher, program coordinator and campus director at a private college, Carmela joined 星空传媒视频 in 2005 as Manager of Admissions and Scheduling. She later served as Coordinator of Academic Systems before becoming the Dean of Academic Systems in 2014. Carmela holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Accounting from McGill University and is a CMA-CPA.

Carmela is looking forward to new challenges and to working more closely with faculty.

4 ways to celebrate Giving Tuesday today

1. Help students struggling with learning challenges get a costly assessment required to access support from the Student AccessAbility Centre.

2. Feed our students during these difficult times with your donation of non-perishable food. Drop off items at the shipping doors at 4011 de Maisonneuve (parking lot entrance) Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 鈥� 3 p.m.

3. Become a Secret Santa聽for children in care of Batshaw. To date, 20 Dawson employees have committed to 42 children. There are still two children waiting to be matched with a member of the Dawson community and there are more kids who are available. Contact faculty member Janice Harvey if interested. You can also refer to this info from the last D News.

4. Support basic needs in Tuapi, Nicaragua, the community that welcomed North-South students for their Field Trip a few years ago. Two powerful hurricanes struck the community last month. The alumni and community have raised more than $6,000 but are hoping to reach their $10,000 goal to supply food and basic necessities.

Howlett family doubles Nursing award recipients during pandemic year

The Howlett family thought that Nursing students needed extra encouragement in the context of the pandemic. This semester, four future nurses from 星空传媒视频 were honoured and encouraged by receiving the Anne-Marie Howlett Memorial Award.

Guest psychologist on stress of pandemic on college students

The Psychology Profile invited Dr. Nafissa Ismail to speak yesterday about the effects of the pandemic and confinement聽on college students. She is聽a psychology professor and researcher at the University of Ottawa. Her area of expertise examines the impact of stressors during different periods of development and their profound long-lasting effects on brain function.聽

Six alumni of the North-South Studies Profile in Social Science moved into action in early November when they heard that Tuapi, Nicaragua was in the line of Hurricane Eta.

Two fundraising professionals join Foundation Board

Fundraising consultant Elaine Lalonde (mother of North-South Studies alumna) and Claudia Mastrocola (Class of 2013, Community, Recreation and Leadership Training) joined the Board of Directors of the 星空传媒视频 Foundation at the Nov. 23 meeting.

The Foundation has bolstered its in-house fundraising expertise by welcoming these two new board members.

Elaine brings over 30 years of experience in fundraising to the Foundation. After several fundraising roles in the nonprofit sector, she is now a Senior Consultant with Global Philanthropic Canada Inc.

Claudia has seven years of experience managing fundraising events. She works as an event manager with the Italian-Canadian Community Foundation.

Gabriel Tordjman’s book published

Gabriel Tordjman鈥檚 book was published this summer. The book is entitled: Darwin鈥檚 Tea Party; Biological Knowledge, Evolution, Genetics and Human Nature.

The book by the 星空传媒视频 Humanities teacher examines how biological knowledge has transformed the planet and reshaped humanity. Using the concept of biological knowledge, the author explores key persons, places, ideas and events that have shaped the world. He shows that while the development of biological knowledge has opened vast new vistas in our understanding of the living world and promises material abundance for some; refracted through the distorting lens of ideology, it has also contributed to great inequality and oppression.
