Dawson butterfly news
August 29th, 2024
In the outdoor courtyard beside Conrod鈥檚 on the second floor, a new butterfly nursery is being constructed by students. The first iteration of a structure was created by Adam Kingsland鈥檚 mechanical engineering class, and then another version was designed by Kim Webb鈥檚 Industrial Design class.
A prototype was constructed from cardboard first and designs reviewed by the students. Now a cedar frame is held together by laser printed custom joints made at Dawson. The students and teachers have created a truly wonderful new home for Dawson鈥檚 butterflies.
Staff are invited to participate in our Butterfly Foster Program, back this year! 750 painted lady caterpillars are being fostered by the Dawson community at Dawson in the butterfly nursery, in student spaces and offices and in homes of employees.
To get your butterfly kit:
- Come to 4A.0 (on the fourth floor between A & B wings near the Sherbrooke St. side) on Tuesday, Sept. 3 from聽10 AM-12 PM & 1 PM -3 PM
- First come, first served

Food researchers from around the world gathered at Dawson
May 23rd, 2024
Industrialized food production and international food supply chains significantly increase food insecurity, worsen environmental degradation, and lead to inadequate livelihoods especially for women and youth. Food systems have the potential to be multi-functional levers for change. Small-scale, Indigenous, and traditional approaches can offer needed solutions for transformation.
Last week at 星空传媒视频, a group of food researchers from Kenya, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and other parts of Canada met each other for the first time as part of a new major international project to identify, measure, and tell the stories of regional sustainable food systems. The project is called FLOW (Food, Learning and Growing) Partnership: Seeding Sustainability Transformation.
