Peer mentor program continues to support new students

In September of 2020, Dawson’s COVID-19 Steering Committee approved the creation of a student peer mentoring initiative. The plan was to assemble and train a team of second- and third-year students who would mentor new students adjusting to the remote learning environment.

Donations needed for Food Bank

February 9th, 2021

Your support is requested to help stock the Food Bank in the College’s Financial Aid Office.

Students in need can make appointments to “shop the shelves” on Fridays. Yvonne Dudley reports that our supplies are running low.

Drop off arrangements 
The Facilities Management team has arranged a drop off for your nonperishable food donations. Come to the shipping doors, 4011 de Maisonneuve (Parking entrance), from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. If you are on campus, you can also bring your donation directly to Financial Aid in 4E2.

Needs list:
Pasta, sauce, rice, dried legumes, spices, barley, quinoa, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, honey, canned beans, canned vegetables, corn, peas, green/yellow beans, beets, carrots, asparagus, potatoes, tomatoes, canned meats; turkey, chicken, ham, beef, tuna, salmon, sardines, shelf safe oat, almond, soya milk, coconut milk, tofu, Prepared soups, beans and chili. Non-food items are also needed, such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, tampons and pads, shampoo.

Student Wellness Challenge begins Feb. 15

A Wellness Challenge for Students is being launched Feb. 15

Student Services, Sustainability and Communications have developed a peer to peer model that will encourage students to sustain healthy minds and healthy bodies through awareness and prevention.

Students will learn about how to create positive habits and find motivation from one another to combat the mental and physical burden they may be experiencing. Participants will earn entries into a draw for prizes throughout the semester.

Mental health and well-being are essential to student success. To find out more, students can follow @ on Instagram.


After “Rebellion” students discuss climate change at Feb. 18 panel

February 9th, 2021

Five inspiring Dawson students and alumni will discuss their views and actions on the Climate Crisis at the Environmental Seminar at Dawson (virtually) on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.

The 2019 climate march was featured in an episode of David Suzuki's The Nature of Things entitled "Rebellion". The mobilization of the College was spearheaded by the Green Earth Club. Students will discuss their involvement in the march as youth activists and present their current projects.

Presentations will be followed by a Q & A. This panel is being moderated by Brian Mader and introduced by Anna-Liisa Aunio. Please watch the episode Rebellion, which is available free on CBC Gem here:

Over 100 students in need receive new bursary

February 9th, 2021

Students have greater needs this year so ǿմýƵ is delivering more support. One example is the ǿմýƵ Financial Aid Bursary (DCFAB), which was set up last fall by the Dawson Student Union (DSU), the Student Services team of the College and the ǿմýƵ Foundation. The Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur has provided additional support.

“I am pleased to report that as of Feb. 1, we have distributed $83,250 through the DCFAB to 123 students,” said Monique Magnan, Director of Student Services.

Updates to Policy for a Smoke-Free College

January 26th, 2021

The Policy for a Smoke-Free College was updated in November. The main changes to the policy are:

  • Progressive sanctions for students and employees, including fines
  • Cannabis is prohibited
  • Roles and responsibilities have been updated
  • Third-hand smoke (residue that remains on objects) is included
  • Tips and support available for employees through Human Resources and for students through College Nurse Julie Drolet
  • What to do if a student is vaping/smoking during a Zoom class
