It’s the first-ever SPACE Week at Dawson
May 4th, 2022
It’s the first-ever SPACE (Sciences Participating with Arts and Culture in Education) Week at Dawson!
From robotics demos to a collective drawing activity, the entire Dawson community is invited to experience exhibitions, project displays, interactive activities and more presented by the student enrichment initiative SPACE, which promotes exploration, discussion, and collaboration beyond the classroom and across disciplines.
As part of this week, Dawson Science student Michael Bomba unveiled an electric guitar he built from scratch in tribute to the Fender Broadcaster, or "The Blackguard", which was the prototype for the first mass-produced solid-body electric guitars in the late '40s.

SPACE students win the Astro Prize at the McGill Physics Hackathon
December 1st, 2021
Dawson students once again took part in the McGill Physics Hackathon which took place this year on November 6-7. The goal of the friendly computer programming competition was simple: to welcome everyone into the wonderful world of scientific computing!
Over a 24-hour period, participants had the opportunity to work on projects combining the physical sciences and computing, and to meet and learn from like-minded, curious, and passionate individuals as well as with experts from both academia and industry.
A team of mainly Dawson students—Shawn Maor, Syphax Ramdani, Joey Yu—won the Astrophysics prize for their project, Star Formation, and were awarded telescopes! A write-up of their experience can be found on the SPACE website:
The students also earned credits towards the new SPACE: Arts and Sciences Certificate by competing and creating a project for the hackathon.
Launch of the SPACE: Arts and Sciences Certificate
August 18th, 2021
SPACE is excited to announce the launch of the new The certificate will guide students in making connections between the arts and sciences, including the social sciences, through coursework as well as activities and projects that bridge the classroom and co-curricular activities. Students will explore topics across the arts and sciences and be offered the opportunity both to broaden their education beyond their chosen program and to deepen their knowledge and skills within their field of study.
Students will be able to complete the certificate through individualized pathways and be part of a dynamic learning community with the support of peer and faculty mentorship.
Faculty who are interested in cross-listing one or more of their courses with the SPACE certificate may do so by contacting Ursula Sommerer at usommerer@dawsoncollege.qc.ca.

TransLuminal Project: Call for Submissions due May 25
May 18th, 2021
What does it mean to go beyond the speed of light?
TransLuminal, a multilayered, illuminated 10’ x 5’ mural that explores the delineation of boundaries and the movement beyond them, was created in the spring of 2015 as a College-wide community project. It is displayed in the 4 A/B corridor at ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ÊÓƵ
In March 2020, just prior to the pandemic shutdown, the lightbox was dismounted and subsequently, the electronics powering it were replaced and upgraded.
As part of the TransLuminal project relaunch, we are inviting the greater Dawson Community—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others—to take part and to interpret through creative imagery and short reflections what it means to go beyond the speed of light. Curated images submitted by participants will be uploaded to the lightbox, adding a new layer of expression to this exploration of the intersections of the arts and sciences which is a hallmark of the SPACE initiative.
