6th annual SPACE writing competition: winners and honourable mentions

In 2023-2024, SPACE held its sixth annual writing competition. Students from all disciplines across 星空传媒视频 were invited to submit writing that offered a personal interpretation of this year鈥檚 theme,听.听The submissions were divided into three categories鈥攑rose (fiction and creative non-fiction), poetry and essay鈥攁nd were judged in a blind fashion by Lois Valliant (retired Faculty, Fine Arts) and Hannah Rahimi (Faculty, English).
Entries were evaluated according to originality and depth of thought, style, arts-sciences connections and relation to the theme. The winners received gift certificates from Argo Bookstore, and the winners and honourable mentions have been published and highlighted on the SPACE website. You can read and comment on their thought-provoking work .

Join us for Dawson’s Certificate Day Nov. 8

Certificates offer students from all programs the opportunity听to interact in a learning community of fellow students and teachers who share a passion for thinking about and finding solutions for specific historical and contemporary issues.听Students currently can take along with their DEC a certificate in Women鈥檚/Gender Studies, Hellenic Studies, Peace Studies, Decolonization and Indigenization Studies, SPACE: Arts and Sciences, and Environment and Sustainability.
Interested in learning more about any of these certificates? Wondering about how to get more involved or the possibilities for co-teaching a certificate course with a colleague? If so, we invite you听to drop by the Upper Atrium on Wednesday, November 8 between 10 AM and 3 PM.听

SPACEweek 2023 is on May 1-5

The second annual SPACEweek will take place during the first week of May. The SPACEweek showcase in 3C.1 will feature work by students from across the arts and sciences who participated in SPACE in 2022-23. It will include displays, demonstrations, interactive activities, student talks and presentations, readings, and competitions. Robotics demonstrations and presentations will be held throughout the week.
Visitors can participate in the showcase by creating alternate versions of famous artworks by following a series of 鈥淲hat if鈥 prompts; casting their vote for the people鈥檚 choice award for the ScienceFest 2023 photo contest; joining a series of walking tours around Dawson using the AR Cit茅 app; and writing and answering questions in response to viewing artworks by students.
On Thursday, May 4 we invite all to a reading by the winners of the fifth annual SPACE writing contest, an interactive art activity, and live performances of songs created from the ChatGPT Song Writing Contest.
Highlights from Friday will include a session of virtual talks by renowned planetary scientists鈥 A grand tour of the solar system: from Mercury and the Moon to the outer reaches!鈥攆ollowed by mobile robot navigation challenge races late afternoon.
The majority of the activities will take place in 3C.1. Stay tuned for the full schedule!

Four Dawson students presented abstract at Lunar and Planetary Science conference

When it was time to submit an abstract to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas, the Dawson student team was not sure which category described them best.
鈥淚 think we are the first CEGEP students to present research at the LPI! Undergraduate was the category closest to us,鈥 said Darcy Loane-Billings (Pure & Applied Science), lead author of the abstract and second-year student at Dawson.

SPACE students attend NASA workshop at Dawson

The first workshop on , took place at 星空传媒视频 from Jan. 9 to 11. The workshop, the only NASA sanctioned event held outside of the United States, was co-convened by Dawson鈥檚 Richard Soare (faculty, Geography) and Jim Garvin, formerly NASA鈥檚 Chief Mars Scientist and currently the Principal Investigator of the DAVINCI Mission to Venus.

Dawson team wins Sportsmanship prize at Robotics competition

The Dawson Robotics team brought home the Sportsmanship prize from the multidisciplinary CRC Robotics' Arcanum 2022 competition held from April 28 to 30 at the 脡cole Cur茅-Antoine-Labelle. The team also won first place in the video production category and second in the programming and kiosks competition.
