Congrats to Dawson鈥檚 Class of 2024

In June, Dawson added another 2,784 graduates to our alumni community of over 100,000.

The graduates were celebrated at two graduation ceremonies on June 25 at Place des Arts.

In addition to diplomas, 55 graduates received awards in recognition of academics, perseverance, community service and volunteer commitment. In total, the awards valued $33,100; many are made possible through donors to the Dawson Foundation.

Tommy Diamantakos is new Dean of SSBT

After serving as interim Dean of Social Science and Business Technologies since March, Tommy Diamantakos was officially appointed to the role on June 10.

Tommy鈥檚 path to this position began as a teacher of English as a second language at Vanier College. He has also worked as an Associate Academic Dean at Heritage College and as Coordinator of Continuing Education at Vanier College. Prior to the new position, Tommy was Associate Dean for Dawson鈥檚 Creative and Applied Arts sector from 2021-2024.

Tommy holds a sociology degree from Concordia University and a master鈥檚 degree in education from the University of Sherbrooke. Tommy graduated from Dawson from the Cinema | Communications profile in Arts, Literature and Communication.

Tommy鈥檚 new role includes overseeing the programs in Social Science and Business Technologies as well as Liberal Arts, Community, Recreation and Leadership Training and the Humanities Department.

鈥淲e have rolled out a new Social Science program, one of the biggest in the province,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his is very exciting! I am also eager to work with the Business Administration team as we are currently revising that program. I鈥檓 excited to start the academic year in the sector and look forward to supporting students and teachers.鈥

Tommy likes that Dawson is a big college but feels like a small community. He says: 鈥淒awson offers great services to students and teachers. I love working here.鈥

Francesca Cuffaro now Manager of Admissions & Records

Over the last 24 years, Francesca Cuffaro has worked in every department within Academic Systems at Dawson. Most recently she was the administration technician in Admissions and Records.

On July 2, Francesca was appointed to the role of Manager, Admissions & Records.

鈥淚 am looking forward to the challenge of my new role as manager and using my experience and skills to make an impact on quality higher education,鈥 Francesca said.

Prior to working at Dawson, she studied here. Francesca graduated from the Social Science program in 1985. During her decades as an employee, she has represented the Dawson Support Staff on the College鈥檚 Board of Governors and served her former union as treasurer.

鈥淲hat I like best about Dawson is being part of a community that promotes well-being, so that all students and employees are respected, valued, and supported,鈥 she said.

Gabriel Di Lullo is new IST Associate Director

Gabriel Di Lullo joined Dawson Aug. 12 as the new Associate Director of IT Solutions (Systems and Programming). He succeeds Derek Gaucher who retired in the summer.

Gabriel is a graduate of Dawson (Class of 1988, Social Science) and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Concordia University. 鈥淎s an alumnus of Dawson, I鈥檓 especially excited to return to the institution and contribute to its continued success,鈥 he said.

In his new role, Gabriel is responsible for leading the IST team responsible for the development and implementation of IT solutions, including the website and Omnivox.

Gabriel comes to Dawson from Agropur where he worked as IST & Cyber Security program manager. Prior to that, he served as Senior Manager of Information Technologies at Bell Technical Solutions for over a decade where he successfully led a team in designing and deploying IT solutions.

Women’s/Gender Studies celebration of graduates May 28

Please join us to celebrate our wonderful Women鈥檚/Gender Studies student graduates as they prepare to embark on their next adventure.

Tuesday, May 28, 2 PM-5 PM in Oliver鈥檚 (2C.17)

Our special guest speaker is Sandra Mouafo Nouadje. She is a queer second- generation Franco-Cameroonian immigrant, writer, community organizer, and the Executive Director for Project 10, a non-for-profit and registered charity supporting 2LGBTQ+ youth between 14-25 years of age.

It means a great deal for the students to celebrate with their friends and teachers.


Interior Design Vernissage is June 6

As we embark on a new chapter, we are excited to welcome you to our 2024 星空传媒视频 Interior Design Exhibition: a celebration of our creativity and passion for Interior聽Design!

Throughout our time at Dawson, we've navigated聽a program revision聽and the uncertainties of a post-COVID world, emerging as stronger professionals and more connected than ever before. Despite the turbulence of change, we've upheld a culture of adaptability, high performance, and unwavering support for one another.

In this exhibition,聽you will聽experience the embodiment of our hard work and determination.聽With聽diverse projects聽and聽innovative solutions, each project mirrors our commitment to excellence and collaboration. We invite you to immerse yourself in our work, share in our triumphs, and witness the bonds that unite us; a close-knit family of passionate designers.

The Interior Design 2024 Vernissage is Thursday, June 6 from 5 PM to 9 PM in 3C.1. The exhibition continues on Friday, June 7 from 9 AM to 4 PM in 3C.1.

 


Illustration Vernissage is May 29

Join us at the Illustration 2024 Vernissage, an exciting showcase of 36 emerging illustrators who have honed their skills and artistic voices over the past three years. It will be held on May 29th in 3C.1 from 5:30-10PM. This year鈥檚 event, inspired by the imaginative artwork of student Juliette Lafleur-Loughrey, transports us to a whimsical world where animal and popcorn-like stylish creatures vividly represent diversity and community.

This event is open to the public and the Exhibition will continue on May 30th from 12:- 9:00 p.m and May 31st from 12:00 - 7:00 p.m. The theme of inclusivity and imagination is brought to life not only through the artwork but also through the design of the event space, including engaging signage and interactive displays.

This vernissage is not only a celebration of our students鈥 artistic achievements but also an homage to the careers of Pauline Fresco and Meinert Hansen, two esteemed faculty members who are retiring after years of dedication and inspiration. This event also marks their last semester, making it a particularly poignant moment for us all.


3D Animation and CGI Vernissage June 5-6

May 23rd, 2024

Students will showcase short thesis films completed during the final year of 3D Animation and CGI. Screenings take place in the Dawson Theatre (June 5 at 7 PM and June 6 at 3 PM 5 PM, 7 PM and 9 PM) and an exhibition of聽art boards and showreels will be set up in 5E.16, which will also have catering. Students have been working night and day, on their own and in teams, to plan all aspects of the event while also preparing to show off their amazing talents and skills.


Indigenous student and grad featured in Warrior Up

Kayla Spencer-Young, who will graduate next month from Dawson鈥檚 Pure and Applied Science program, and Rotshenn贸n:ni Two-Axe (Class of 2023, Health Science) will be featured in a TV series called Warrior Up on APTN. The series follows inspiring and activist Indigenous youth aged 15 to 26 as they face challenges and make positive changes happen in their communities and beyond. Kayla and Rotshenn贸n:ni were chosen because they are student founders of IndigeSTEM, which also won a .
