Eight faculty projects approved for funding through Dawson Foundation

Eight projects proposed by faculty have been approved for funding available through the Dawson Foundation’s Student Academic Enrichment Fund.
The projects that will receive funding in 2023-2024 are: Illustration Quebec membership and events, AR Cité - AI production tools and community awareness, Ecology & Culture (Costa Rica complimentary course), Resources for Science on tourne, Sonic levitator kits for student labs, Interprofessional Education Symposium, Facilities visit for outdoor education programming, and the Cuba Trip (North-South Studies/ Social Change and Solidarity).
Three of the projects – the Cuba trip, the Interprofessional Education Symposium and the Facilities visit for CRLT – have been approved for three years of funding.
This year, all proposals received were reviewed and approved by the SAEF committee: Megan Ainscow, Communications; Fred Jansen, Foundation; Geoff Kloos, Student Services; Catherine Lebel, Dean of Academic Development; and three student representatives from the Dawson Student Union. Each relevant sector dean also approved.
A total of $39,795.17 will be distributed by the Dawson Foundation to implement these projects that will enhance the academic experience of our students in a wide array of programs.

Three members of the Dawson community were honoured with Forces Avenir awards on May 4: students Kitenge Kayembe and Fred-Dgennie Louis were recognized, respectively, for commitment and perseverance. Physics faculty member Joel Trudeau was honoured for his commitment to students.

A student community built on sustainability is definitely a Forces Avenir

The student-run Dawson Sustainability Community is committed to supporting ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ÊÓƵ’s award-winning, globally recognized commitment to sustainability.
Led by Environmental Science students Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon, the students have worked on a variety of projects that support Dawson’s goal of promoting sustainability through reconnecting people, communities, and Nature.
On May 4, Narcisse and Kaligua received a Forces Avenir award in the Environment category for their Dawson Sustainability Community project.

Mahsa Amini’s legacy is alive at Dawson

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini was arrested in Iran for not wearing a hijab correctly. Eyewitnesses say she was severely beaten. Hours later, she died at the age of 22. Mahsa had just been admitted to university and intended to pursue law. Her death sparked protests in Iran and around the world.
At Dawson, the Mahsa Amini Initiative was created by students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda. Their work was recognized on May 4 with the Forces Avenir Award in the category of Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice. Their project has also advanced for consideration at the provincial level.

Meet Dawson’s 2023 Forces AVENIR cohort

Every year, Dawson has had extraordinary students, teachers and staff who enrich our community with their projects, perseverance and passion.
This year, Dawson is recognizing individuals: student Kitenge Kayembe and faculty member Joel Trudeau for their commitment; and student Fred-Dgennie Louis for her perseverance. Dawson is also recognizing students for their great projects: Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon for the Dawson Sustainability Project in the Environment category; and students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda for The Mahsa Amini Initiative in the Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice category.
The local ceremony will be Thursday, May 4 at Dawson. Both projects are moving forward for consideration at the provincial level of Forces AVENIR. Check the next D News on May 17 for a feature on our 2023 laureates.
