New School community from today and yesterday celebrated 50th anniversary

About 150 current and former students, facilitators, faculty and friends of New School attended a 50th anniversary celebration at Dawson on April 13. For many, New School was a defining moment in their lives.
It was 鈥渞eally great to see so many people from such a span of years come out with fond memories of New School,鈥 said Andrew Katz, an English teacher who has been teaching in the New School for the last six years.
Andrew, who served as MC, asked the guests what had brought them back to New School. Various guests in the audience offered answers: 鈥渃ommunity, acceptance, sharing, memories, inspiration, love, safe places, challenges, accountability, growth, laughter, humour, Greta,聽identity, empowerment, party, making a difference, humanism, activism, care.鈥

Grads & retirees join students & faculty for New School’s 50th

More than 125 alumni, faculty, both active and retired, as well as current students came together on April 13 to celebrate 50 years of New School at Dawson.
One of the founders, Greta Hofmann Nemiroff, gave the keynote address and many people shared "Because of New School" impacts on their life, such as:
"I learned that I had a voice and it mattered what I said."
"I made friendships that have lasted for decades."
"I learned how to have productive conversations on difficult subjects while staying respectful..."
"I am still alive!!!!"

Another successful playtest event by IVGD

The Independent Video Game Design program held another public indie game playtesting event on Friday, April 12 in room 3C.1.
The event gathered teams of students, graduates and local independent game developers to showcase their games to the public. Some of the teams present included Superset Games (Carl Boisvert, 脡meric Coude, Juan Osorio, Charles-Antoine Solis), a team composed of former graduates of the IVGD program who were showing Project Containment, their new multiplayer-focused survival game, as well as Obesquito (Shane Barnard, Sooah Kim, Vlad Sebastian Raducan), a team of current students who were showing Mark of the Knights, a classic action adventure game.
The IVGD hosts free public playtest events every two months for all students, graduates and local developers.

Students and employees enjoyed three great days of programming at Dawson's Francof锚te just before the Easter long weekend.
Organizer and French faculty member Laetitia Desanti was very pleased with the participation and reported that the workshop and conference on maple syrup was a highlight :

Founder of New School reflects on 50th

Dawson invited Greta Hofmann Nemiroff, a living legend in innovative education and women鈥檚 studies in Canada as well as a beloved retiree of Dawson, to write a personal reflection on the occasion of New School鈥檚 50th anniversary. Greta was a founding member of Dawson鈥檚 New School in 1973 and served as its director from 1975-2015. She is also the author of a book about the New School: Reconstructing Education: Toward a Pedagogy of Critical Humanism. Toronto: OISE Press, 1992.

Calling all 1998 to 2023 alumni, current and future students, present and retired teachers, and all friends of our profile. You are invited to this big community celebration and solidarity fundraiser! The event will take place in 5B.16 at Dawson on Thursday, April 25 from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
This year鈥檚 program will include:
- Celebration of the final North South Studies graduating class
- Launch of the Social Change & Solidarity local partnerships
- Retirement celebration for Mary Ann Farkas
- Alumni through the decades panel
- Student presentation of their field trip to Cuba
- Cuban appetizers, cocktails, and mocktails
- Art exhibit and swag (NSS and SCS tote bags!)
- Solidarity photo booth
- Music and dancing!!
All proceeds will go to support Social Change & Solidarity activities 鈥 including the 2024-2025 Field Trip to Cuba, and the profile鈥檚 new local social justice partnerships.
