Indigenous students reflect on their work exhibited at Dawson鈥檚 gallery

Indigenous students at Dawson celebrated a year of land-based learning at a vernissage of their artwork and projects on May 10 at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery.

The work was created in the Learning Perspectives course of the Journeys program co-taught by Amanda Lickers and Jocelyn Parr over the last academic year of 2023-2024.

Student Zye Rashontiiostha Mayo said there were two goals for the exhibit: 鈥渟haring our artwork and sharing our voices.鈥

New School community from today and yesterday celebrated 50th anniversary

About 150 current and former students, facilitators, faculty and friends of New School attended a 50th anniversary celebration at Dawson on April 13. For many, New School was a defining moment in their lives.

It was 鈥渞eally great to see so many people from such a span of years come out with fond memories of New School,鈥 said Andrew Katz, an English teacher who has been teaching in the New School for the last six years.

Andrew, who served as MC, asked the guests what had brought them back to New School. Various guests in the audience offered answers: 鈥渃ommunity, acceptance, sharing, memories, inspiration, love, safe places, challenges, accountability, growth, laughter, humour, Greta,聽identity, empowerment, party, making a difference, humanism, activism, care.鈥

Grads & retirees join students & faculty for New School’s 50th

More than 125 alumni, faculty, both active and retired, as well as current students came together on April 13 to celebrate 50 years of New School at Dawson.

One of the founders, Greta Hofmann Nemiroff, gave the keynote address and many people shared "Because of New School" impacts on their life, such as:

"I learned that I had a voice and it mattered what I said."

"I made friendships that have lasted for decades."

"I learned how to have productive conversations on difficult subjects while staying respectful..."

"I am still alive!!!!"
