Senate has recommended new Social Science Program

Dawson will have a brand new Social Science Program! After three years of work, the input of more than 100 teachers and professionals, and consultation with universities and other stakeholders and partners, the Senate of ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ÊÓƵ decided to recommend the revision of the pre-university program at their Sept. 20 meeting. It will be presented to Dawson’s Board of Governors for formal approval on Oct. 12 and Dawson expects to welcome its first cohort in the Fall of 2023.
The Viewbook and the website are being updated and will reflect the new program and its profiles in October.
Six provincial candidates came to Dawson for an election debate

Following a long-standing tradition at Dawson, six provincial election candidates from the Ville-Marie riding were invited to answer questions from the Dawson community about the future of young anglophone and allophone Quebecers on Tuesday.
Award-winning journalist and Dawson alumnus Christopher Curtis moderated the debate between Jérémy Côté (Québec Solidaire), Bonnie Feigenbaum (Conservative Party), Balarama Holness (Bloc Montreal), Désirée McGraw (Quebec Liberal Party), Colin Standish (Quebec Canadian Party) and Alex Tyrell (Green Party).
The well-attended event was organized by the Dawson Student Union in collaboration with the Law, Society and Justice Profile and the Peace Centre. The candidates each addressed their respective parties' plans to tackle issues surrounding national identity, multiculturalism, environmental policy and climate change.

70 Dawson students signed up for AI workshops this fall

Dawson AI and are hosting a series of workshops, which will give Dawson students the opportunity to learn AI through hands-on learning. The workshop series will cover a wide range of AI topics including data manipulation, fundamental machine learning models, deep learning, reinforcement learning and other advanced topics.
70 Dawson students are signed up to take part in the workshops. The series of eight workshops will begin this Saturday, Sept. 24 and end on Nov. 19. Students will have the opportunity to present their work and learnings at the end of the program.
This workshop series is available to college students in Quebec and is made possible by the generous funding of a NovaScience Program grant awarded to DawsonAI from the Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation.

Academic Skills Centre workshops starting Sept. 26

The Academic Skills Centre is running a series of seven workshops to help students prepare for, take and evaluate their own performance. The workshops run from Sept. 26 through Oct. 5. Please encourage your students to sign up.
In the workshops they will:
- Explore different ways to prepare for exam formats: essay, short answer, multiple choice
- Improve their strategies for taking exams

Students tackle climate change by building wetland as part of unique Phys. Ed. course

A class of over 25 students reclaimed a concrete heat island on Dawson’s urban campus by transforming it into a wetland as part of a unique-in-Canada Physical Education course. The brand-new Eco-Landscaping course was co-developed by Dawson’s Physical Education Department and the Sustainability Office.

Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer will give Peace Week keynote Sept. 15

Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer will offer perspectives on Indigenous sciences and western science in her Peace Week keynote address, entitled Confronting Western Science Epistemology, online at Dawson at 2 p.m. on Sept. 15. In her publications and her speaking engagements, she proposes a revolutionary way to rethink how we approach the land and the natural sciences.
KimmererÌýis a mother, scientist, decorated professor and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment, whose mission is to create programs which draw on the wisdom of both Indigenous and scientific knowledge for our shared goals of sustainability.
Her interests in restoration include not only restoration of ecological communities, but restoration of our relationships to land. She holds a BSc in Botany from SUNY ESF, an MS and PhD in Botany from the University of Wisconsin and is the author ofÌýnumerousÌýscientific papers on plant ecology, bryophyte ecology, traditionalÌýknowledgeÌýand restoration ecology.
