Interprofessional Education Symposium
This past Friday, Nov. 11, 210 third year medical technology and social service students, faculty, and staff participated in the first ever Interprofessional Education Symposium. The learning objectives of the day included conflict resolution, collective competence, collective care, and critical hope. A mixture of active learning strategies, creative writing, discussions, two live theatre productions, guest speakers, and collaborative design all helped reinforce the learning objectives.
The team is still processing the impact of the day. We will have more to share in a few weeks. In the meantime, here are just a few of the comments we鈥檝e received from the students so far.
Physiotherapy Technology student Sarah Levy said 鈥渢hroughout my three years in the Physiotherapy Technology program, I鈥檝e been able to lean on my fellow classmates during the many challenging moments. What I鈥檝e learned from this IPE Symposium is that my network of who I can lean on is larger than I thought. I feel fortunate to have been able to make these connections as I can see them being useful in the workplace.鈥
Elijah Noel, a Social Service student, said 鈥渋t was a pleasure gaining a new in-depth understanding of the five other disciples through interactive workshops which were a welcome change to schedule. Through active learning, we were able to leave the symposium with a melting pot of ideas and resources from students and staff from programs throughout the health care sector.鈥
听鈥淚 found the symposium to be very engaging鈥 said Shyam Patel, a Biomedical Laboratory Technology student. 鈥淚t was nice to meet others who will be working in the health system who come from different disciplines. The symposium was personable, as we could all relate to the stress of our future careers. It was nice to learn that we all have similar stressors, goals, and interests for healthcare in the future.鈥
