Program Goals
The program ensures that the students are able to:
- effectively use聽 digital medical imaging equipment related to the procedures outlined in the OTIMROEPMQ/CAMRT competency profiles;
- explain and apply in the clinical environment the theory behind all the procedures outlined in the OTIMROEPMQ/CAMRT competency profiles;
- analyze the patient鈥檚 examination prescription and prepare the appropriate radiographic equipment, technical factors/parameters and accessory devices for the requested procedure;
- carry out all basic radiographic examinations outlined in the CAMRT competency profile and the 鈥淥TIMROEPMQ Standards of Practice鈥, unaided, with optimum diagnostic quality and minimum discomfort to the patient;
- identify and perform supplemental positions/projections for routine and specialized radiological examinations/procedures;
- analyze and perform processing techniques;
- assess the radiographic images produced;
- acquire the technical ability to work accurately and effectively, especially under pressure;
- adapt quickly to new technologies and modify examinations to various clinical situations, patient needs/conditions, and pathological considerations;
- work efficiently as a member of a health care team;
- evaluate urgent and emergency situations and take appropriate actions;
- assist the radiologist in carrying out radiological procedures;
- perform and evaluate quality control testing of x-ray generators, processors and accessory equipment;
- describe the different laws which govern the technologist in Radiology;
- apply the CAMRT and OTIMROEPMQ Codes of Ethics;
- demonstrate a professional attitude toward others and be responsible for one鈥檚 own training;
- analyze and evaluate the biological effects of radiation that may result from ionizing radiation;
- calculate skin dose and determine diagnostic reference levels (DRL);
- ensure maximum radiation protection to him/herself, the patient, the hospital staff and the general public by applying the Provincial and Federal Radiation Safety Codes;
- evaluate and perform patient care procedures applicable before, during and after each examination;
- perform all related departmental duties expected of a qualified technologist;
- maintain a professional appearance and be conscientious regarding attendance and punctuality;
- meet the program鈥檚 requirements for professional conduct;
- communicate effectively and ethically with patients, peers, supervisors, and other members of the health care team;
- prepare to write the OTIMROEPMQ certification examination.
Specific to CT, and MRI
- describe the physical phenomena and components of each modality;
- discuss the biological effects of each modality;
- evaluate the factors affecting the quality of the digital images;
- describe and identify on images the normal and abnormal anatomical and physiological features of a structure in cross-section;
- identify the type, amount and route of administration of contrast media used for each modality.

Specific to CT only
- Calculate CT doses and evaluate their radiobiological risks
