Privacy and AI consultations Feb. 28 and Mar. 5 at Dawson

Are you concerned about artificial intelligence being used in an unregulated and ethically-questionable manner, and worried that industry is moving forward at breakneck speed with little oversight?

Do you have opinions on how regulation can be used to protect the privacy of Canadians聽while not deterring leading-edge research and innovation? If so, join our discussion groups on Friday, Feb. 28 or Thursday, March 6. We will be formulating a response to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada鈥檚 consultation on their proposals for ensuring appropriate regulation of AI.

鈥淭he Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) is currently engaged in legislative reform policy analysis of both federal privacy laws. We are examining artificial intelligence (AI) as a subset of this work as it relates specifically to the聽Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act聽(PIPEDA).

鈥淲e are of the view that聽PIPEDA聽falls short in its application to聽AI聽systems and we have identified several areas where聽PIPEDA聽could be enhanced. We are seeking to consult with experts in the field to validate our understanding of how privacy principles should apply and whether our proposals would be consistent with the responsible development and deployment of these systems.鈥

The sessions will occur:

Friday, Feb. 28: 1 p.m. 鈥 2:30 pm in 3H.10
Friday, March 5: 10 a.m. 鈥 11:30 a.m. in 3F.7
